mine aren't foreps. hemostats lock. forceps you jus squeeze w/ your fingers. hemostats clamp shut and you have to unclamp them. work great for holding on

i rinse mine after ever use and dry them.

otolith can expand on forceps and hemostats

You need to rinse them melev and then cloth dry them. It's a pain but it's about the only way to prevent rust. I have the snippers from MD and I forgot once and I noticed a tiny bit of rust.

I use them to get corals from the bottom of the tank (30" tall tank, arm shorter than that), to grab bristleworms, etc.

Rinsing is easy. Drying is usually not done, unless you count air drying. ;) Once there are rust spots, is there something I can do to get them back in shape or are those areas permanently ugly?

Steel wool should do the trick.

i've heard of coating them in Pam spray veggie oil or something like that...but i would never do that as i would fear it would get into the water...so i just rinse well and dry.

OK I got some BAD NEWS today....

Our apartment complex has been bought out, and they are converting the apartments to Condo's. Which means that we either have to buy our apartment, or move out in May when our lease expires......and I can tell you now that the price of our apartment will be way beyond what we can afford to buy.
:( :( :(
So, this puts a big wrench in my reef plans. Originally, I thought I'd be in this apartment for another 2.5 years....now I'm moving in less than 6 months. So.....here's the question. Since I've bought no livestock or consumables yet, do I just set everything aside until we get moved into our new place. Or do I get the reef running with at least some live rock and softies/zoos until we move. (My tank is a 58g).

I've moved my 30g reef before, and have some understanding of what's involved, and we wouldn't be moving farther than across town (30min - 1hr). So is it worth running the reef for 6 months just to have to just break it down and reset up, or do I wait......
Thanks for the help.

Dazed  and Confused

You could try reading the article about moving a tank on my site to see if you think it is worth it. Here's an excerpt:

When it comes to moving a tank, whether that be across the room or across town, success can be assured by your preparations and anticipation for any problems that may occur during the transition. Special consideration should be given to the new location, to make sure all is ready. Electrical needs should already be met, and the floor should be stable and sturdy. Obstacles should be removed at all costs to avoid tripping over anything while carrying the tank, the stand or anything else related to the move.

Whenever I'm about to move a tank, the first thing I do is start making more water. Even if you save every drop, you'll need more water at the new location for sure. If your schedule allows for it, prepare a trashcan or two full of mixed saltwater and have it ready to use. New trashcans run about $7 each at Home Depot, and they make great mixing containers and are equally useful for the moving process itself. Using RO/DI water, salt, a powerhead and a heater, you can have about 30g of water on hand, or more if you set up more than one trashcan full of saltwater. The water should be mixed and waiting at the destination if at all possible.

If you happen to be moving from one house to another, odds are you'll have lots of moving boxes and furniture to deal with. This needs to either be done before or after the tank is moved. When it is time to move your livestock, everything else must be put on hold, or let someone else focus on the rest of the move so you can put all of your attention into getting the tank torn down and re-setup in the new location. Make sure nothing in is in your path that will make it difficult to move the tank, so that it can be done safely....

You can find it on the Hidden Treasure page with the title "Moving a Tank Successfully."

Congrats on the skimmer!! Sounds like a happy weekend.

I think I agree with you LB, I'll probably leave the tank down until we get moved. I just don't think 6 months of set up is worth the take down.

Does cooking the LR actually do much for new rock?? I always thought it was something you did for old, dirty, algae infested rock. Have either of you tried it with new or old rock?? I read through some of the threads on RC, seems like is most valuable on old rock to convert the biological process from algae driven to bacterial driven. Doesn't seem like much use in new rock. Besided, I've always cured my rock in the tank in the dark anyways. I suppose as long as I use really good flow, and keep the rocks blown off and the sump clean, I should be able to clear out any detritus that comes with the rocks......

Comments?

New rock, or old rock, you will get the benifits of Cooking it. It really is just a extenstion of Curing your liverock.

If your tank is not setup atm and you do have the rock I would do it.

i would cook new rock. i haven't read all the threads about it but you do on noew rock as well as old rock

enough packing material? man this thing was packed nice. and some of the piece had round cut outs to accomidate the skimmers size perfectly! i don't think anything moved inside of there. there was a pump compartment w/ a foam lid, the the skimmer body on the lid, then a big foam top that fit the skimmer body on the bottom and the cup on the top, then the cup, then a layer to fit the cup, then 2 layers of foam!!!!
