yeah maybe i'm supposed to stick w/ the phosban crappy one...nah i doubt it :D

on a side note i fed my tank PE mysis and some frozen brine that was soaked in RO/DI for about 12hrs then drained. i fed the tank and it "killed" the skimmer from about 2pm on wed. and it wasn't working until i woke up at 7:30am Thurs! not quite sure why it would take that long to get back up and running. wonder why the oils hit it so hard. any advice on what food to feed so i don't "kill" it

i believe my homemade mush didn't do that...i believe it actually made my skimmer go nutz till it got some of it skimmed out. if i make some more homemade food i'll add a packed of PE mysis to tame down the over skimming. maybe this will be a happy medium??

My Mysis doesn't do that at all and I feed a big chunk of it. Try making a mix of frozen together so it doesn't have that affect on it. May I ask what that reactor ran you from RM?

Lunch, I've noticed that some foods will crash the foam and some will will make it go crazy. My blender mush would make my beckett go nuts for a few minutes kills the foam in the NW's for about 30 minutes. Most prepared foods would kill the foam in my beckett for anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes but never any longer than that.

Do you put silicone grease on your skimmer o-ring? I used to put vaseline on my beckett o-ring occasionally and that would crash the foam for 12-24 hours. Same thing would happen when re-greasing my OM.

jay - do you use PE mysis?? i can't remember what the reactor ran me

Travis - so the same food would do different things to different skimmers??

yeah i put grease on o-rings. i just greased up my ball valve and my skimmer didn't work for a little while

I use PE Mysis every 3 days. I break about an inch by inch worth and feed the tank slowly. Fish love this stuff.

Lunch you have the milwakee PH controller right? Ok so how do I know where to turn the knob for the PH if I want 6.6??? It doesnt have increments like that.

Also did you calibrate with just 7ph?? or did you use a solution of 4 and 7??

arconom - you have to take an educated guess. let it drop...them move it down a little..see where it is at...then drop it some more if you have to.

i calibrated w/ 7.0 and 10.0 those were the 2 solutions i had and they are used for saltwater and 4.0 and 7.0 are used more for freshwater.

Lunchbucket

You use it in tank water? Or effuent? I thought for Low pH of effuent which is the only thing I'm using it for it was best to use either 7 or 4 and 7

That does appear to be the case.

Travis - wierd.

LOL nice hats on the dogs. everyone's avitar has been popiing up in the last week w/ santa hats on them :D

No it doesn't affect mine at all. It might not skim at that current time as well but my cup fills up pretty quick. Now what affects my skimmer is that formula 1 stuff. That stuff will make my skimmer overflow so I always have to empty my cup before feeding that junk.

i HATE formula 1 those binders they put in there make my skimmers go crazy. maybe i should add some formula one after the PE mysis. then maybe it won't kill the skimmer :D

jay - off topic but i take it your family is your avitar. cute little girl you got there buddy. she's adorable. how old are your two little ones?

Lunchbucket

PE is supposed to be the best and i'm sure that is part of the reason that it kills the skimmer

i'll use up my cubes of San Fran bay mysis and brine to see what happens

Lunchbucket

Somewhere I read to thaw PE over night in cold salt water in the refrigerator. I tried but it didnââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t make any difference. They are large mysis. But being freshwater I cant really see how they could contain better nutrition then ones collected from the seaââ"šÂ¬Ã‚¦.

Lunch,

I use the Hikari Mysis , I only get between 15 min to an hour of skimmer shutdown . Sometimes the best has some shortcommings .:D All my fish happen to LOVE the Hikari too , which is a big bonus .

PS I rinse in RODI also .
