Lunchbucket's New 58gal RR inprogress - LOTS OF PICS

i'm thinking it is time for some tank pics this weekend. my two frags from Travis are growing and the suharsinoi is starting to encrust the super glue.

Travis - your suharsinoi is a slow grower isn't it?

Lunchbucket

ok cool. for some reason i was thinking it was gonna be a slow grower so i was surprised when i noticed it encrusting quite fast

well i had a spare Tunze Turbelle (model 7200 132-633gph) laying around and i needed some more flow on the left side o my tank where my cap was. my tang has a bad habbit of settling down on the cap a given' her hell. he poops right on the cap. it is quite annoying. my flow doesn't reach powerful enough over there to blow it all off. i didn't add this pump before as i the Tunze pumps are rather large for my 58gal. well i mounted it w/ the supplied rail system to the back wall and pointed the output towards tha front middle of the tank and :eek2: WOW :eek1: what a difference. my corals were flowing a lot more and the poop got all blown away!!

bad thing is that i don't have a controller for that pump. so now i have to either a) get another single controller or b) get a branch adapter and run both pumps off of one controller.

i'm thinking for the extra 20bucks i will just get another single controller. also i'm thining of getting two photocells so my controllers turn the flow down at night. might be a cool feature...i need to do some research here on RC first to see if they are worth it.

anyhow here are the before an after flow numbers...these are as close as i can guess with my return pump, CL pump, and tunzes.

before - mag950 return pump, iwaki 55rlt CL pump, tunze 7300
min - 1387gph (23.9x's turnover) max - 2040gph (35.1x's turnover)

now - mag950 return, iwaki 55rlt CL, Tunze 7300 and 7200
min - 1517gph (26.1x) max - 2670gph (46x's turnover)

that should be some nice extra flow. i have the Tunze currently running at about 1/2 on teh box as i dont' want to run full blast all the time. i'll wait to pulse it w/ a controller.

i hope nothing gets too upset w/ the new flow in teh tank. i know corals get settled in w/ the flow and light they are used to. anyone see this causing problems?

jay - i was thinking the same thing....but you know how corals get in a "routine" almost. they like the light and flow where they are. it isn't like i rocked thier world by changing stuff drasticly but i got my paranoid mind a rolling :D

i think this pump will turn out to be a HUGE bonus in the long run. more flow and it will pulse like the other (when i get the controller :( ) hope it changes teh grow of my orange cap and makes it plate a lot.

Lunchbucket

Eric, that sounds great. I have the photo-cell sensor on my controller and it slows the flow down each night. It's never failed nor caused any issues.

melev - you like the photocell huh. does it just take the flow down to 30%? or do you get a value to set it at?

more coming your way!

Btw, I never replied to your question about the photo-sensor. It just goes to one mode, rather than alternating. So whatever you have the secondary set to, it should run at that speed.

well i've seen a lot of growth lately and have been loving it. i wish the coraline was off the glass but i'm waiting on my Oceans Motions Mag scaper to ship. then it will be clean and easier to take pics. my algae free won't get some of the hard to get stuff off.

colors have been pretty good. a few pieces haven't colored up all the way yet.

i've broken a few pieces in the process of pulling bryopsis...which i fricking HATE

Dang Lunch, your growth has EXPLODED on some of those pieces! Please tell me that blue tip milli colony is not the frag you got from me a long time ago. If it is, that is some insane growth. Mine has only grown a few millimeters. You are making me want to load my tank up with 400 watters, but then reality sets in and I remember the heat issues and electric bills I was paying in the summer with them.:(

Eric, tell me more about the brain coral. Did you glue it on a rock and it has been encrusting on that, or is it making its own skeleton on its own? I seem to see growth only on the rock itself, like it is a layer and I'd love to have something grow like that.

wow this thread hasn't died:D love the pics. you have some great color in that tank. my fav. is the Cali Tort love the purple.

Eric,
I was just wondering what happened to you...was hoping the PETA nazi's hadn't captured you or you hadn't gotten trapped under something large and heavy and were crying for help....

Tank looks great...I'm seriously jealous...its sick.
I've been having some Ca/Alk swings which I suspect are responsible for most of my corals just sitting there as opposed to growing rapidly like yours. However, I just got my Korallin calcium reactor on-line, and showing a steady 8.0 DKh and 415 Ca.
I'm hoping that resolves that...

Couple of quick questions for you...

What kind of reactor do you run, and what media do you use?
Are you running carbon on your tank?
Do you still have the PCH 1/10 hp chiller on the tank? How often does it cycle typically in an hour?

Nick

Travis - thanks buddy! it is hard when you look at the tank everyday to see growth but the fun thing is i DO see it. must mean they are growing.

yep that blue tip milli is the one you sold me a LONG time ago....that fricking thing is a snail! man i thought it was just my piece that took forever...guess it is a slow grower w/ you too :D i love the color of it though...just wish it would kick into high gear!

this is that coral Feb 11 of 2005!!!!!

this is it today OVER 1 YEAR LATER!! slow butt growth
pink_milli_blue_tip.JPG

melev - it came on a piece of rock to begin w/. it hadn't covered the whole thing though. i think this piece has been w/ me for 3year or so. it grows right on the sand...well i think so (i don't pick it up to see) but it is expanding out sooooo quickly that it is going to touch the glass soon. it has about 1/4" or more of a lip that is grown straight out from it's side.

this is the first pic i can find of it. taken 8 23 02 - 3yr 7months old now!!! that was in my 10gal SPS nano. i almost lost it in my PO4 crash of 04. it died back by 50% or more

kau_cinta_ku - thanks buddy! i'm liking MOST of the coloration...there are pieces that i wish had more color...in due time maybe. cali tort is one of my favs too

maxxII - still defending the world agains PETA dorks. you saying i weak now since you thought i would be trapped under somethign heavy??? :rolleye1: thanks for the very nice compliments. it's not that great so dont' be jealous.

i run a www.reefmania.net Ca Rx and LOVE it!
i use the Schuran "knock off" media from PA's. Jeremy got me started on it
run carbon 24/7 try to change it at least every 2wks.

i have the PCI 1/10hp chiller on the tank still :rolleye1: that is prolly my next piece i'm upgrading (just upgraded to a Deltec skimmer AP600). i HATE the PCI chiller. ok i dont' hate the chiller (it works very well) just had the built in temp probe. it doesn't read real temp. it fluctuates too quickly. it will fluctuate 2degrees before the REAL temp fluctuates one. hence the chiller can kick on and off more then needed. i have my fans set to come on right to limit the chiller kicking on and off. if i had it to do over....Arctica all the way....i'll upgrade some year.

thanks guys!
