lympho vs brook (pyramid butterfly)

i had to do a major water change, and they seem to be ok, but one of them suddenly has cloudy eyes.

my wife made a great point today. will i ever be comfortable transferring them to my dt? answer NO.

i think tonight might be the last night. (they also look very pale since the formalin) and the bath was at .20 not even .25!

Are you treating with formalin in-tank, or doing a 30-45 min bath in a bucket? IMO; the latter is sometimes preferable as you are able to expose the fish to a higher/more effective concentration of formalin and then get him out of it before any permanent damage is done.

I know it's none of my business, but I hope you don't plan on euthanizing them until it's clear they are in great distress.

i was doing a bath, since i took out the formalin they are doing 100x better.

it is your business! i was saying that based on the fact that they looked really bad and in pain. and they did not look like they would come out of this. since the wc they look 1000x better. back to being active and looking horrible :sad2:

i will however do a formalin dip as you are recommending tonight. as bad as they looked in the bath i noticed some of the bumps looking pale around (healing?)

ill try to snap some pics after the bath

I would just stick with dips for now, seeing as how they have such a bad reaction to prolonged exposure when you treat the entire tank. I wouldn't do it tonight however (give them a little more time to recover - do it maybe tomorrow night), and I think only dip one of the butterflys for now - use him as your "guinea pig". If you see improvement with him after the formalin dips, then you'll know it's worth risking it with the other 2.

ok i did a dip on the little one yesterday. looked fine this morning

they are now sitting in a 3.5 gallon bath @ 225ppm formalin (7.5ml)

ill post updated pics tonight

formalin and butterfies dont go well together

2 of them died after 48h.

i am transferring the surviving one to a 5 gallon, and i just ordered 3 more from a online retailer (different province) this time around, i will do prazi and observation for 6 weeks!

Sorry to hear that, pyramids can be a real pain to acclimate. I think I noted it earlier, but I was sucessfull with my pyramids by putting them into NGP right away. Week or two of that, paparazzi, and then maybe CP if you're so inclined.

yeah that is exactly what will happen.

intro with NGP, prazzi and observation

do you remember how you did your NGP dose? since it is a preventive measure did you do a full 10 day (add daily dose)? i am terrified of doing something wrong again. as you said i need to rebuild my confidence and absolutely need a win, i feel like a goldfish would not survive my qt tanks!

Urp, meant prazi not paparazzi (#%#Â¥ autocorrect). Normally I just do a single, prophylactic dose, but since my pyramids came in with signs of mouth infections I did the 10 day regimen with water changed and daily redosing. Frankly, NGP is pretty gentle, so with these fish I'd be inclined to do the full treatment. Just keep an eye on ammonia, though. Stuff does not seem to kill the bio filter, but better to be safe than sorry.

Thanks Ca1ore!

Ok i need some advice, during this outbreak i had a little blue spot blenny in the tank, i took him out on jan 11th to his own 10gallon tank, now he has not shown any signs of anything since then, very active, eats like a champ, skin looks amazing

now how do i assess the situation of when he will be ready to be transferred to my display?

If he's been isolated in his own tank since Jan 11  and has not shown signs of any diseases, I'd say he's good to go. The only thing is if he has been harboring ich in his gills this entire time and none have managed to penetrate the skin. Flukes (the other "hidden disease") should have killed him by now.

He was in a copper bath for 2 weeks prior to the butterfly disease
What would you suggest I do?

Personally, I would run him thru TT before placing in the DT. Reason being is because 2 weeks in copper is not long enough to eradicate ich in some cases. Reason #2 is because I know how your recent luck with fish has gone. So, don't take any chances. I've been there myself - around 5 years ago every fish I bought had some weird exotic disease - so I can rightly point this out to you. ;)

Thanks humble, ill start tt first thing tonight
Cant wait to get a new fish in the display!! Almost to good to be true ;)

Use Prazipro at the onset of transfers 2 & 4. But feed sparingly during transfers 2 & 4, as (a) Prazi will likely supress his appetite (b) It's questionable whether or not you can safely use ammonia reducers with Prazi.

For transfer 5 - you should be able to put him right in the DT (so long as temp & SG matches). Is your DT fallow right now (I forget?) If so, how long has it been fallow?

finally it was no ich, my clown still has the little white spot on him, and all the anthias are squeaky clean! so the display is ready for new inhabitants!

i have 2 5 gallon salty buckets, since the blue spot is so small should i use that for my TT?

Buckets make great TT containers, just make sure the heater isn't too powerful.

Another thought, for the future. When dosing copper it's a good idea to adjust your pH above 7.9, this allows the toxicity of copper to be minimized and maybe some adverse reactions.

+1 Only downside is you can't see the fish too good in a bucket, to look for symptoms of velvet, brook, and other fast killers. But those threats have already passed if you've had this fish in isolation since January.
