So my local petco, which I wouldn't normally shop at, has a beautiful specimen right now and I want to rescue it. I have no experience with anthias though. Can I keep single for now until I would find some others? And how difficult are they. Going into a 220 mixed reef.
I did just that, found an awesome male kept solo at Petco, decided to rescue the guy, then later found females for it, just make sure they are a good bit smaller than the male
As long as the new fish are smaller you should have no issues.
My pair ( once trio ) do fine on twice daily feedings, but they have eaten like pigs since day one.
This advice doesn't agree with my experience. I just received 4 females about an inch long from blue zoo. Ordered medium that's what I got. I added them, then when the lights came on he chased them into the rocks for three days. Now all 4 females are dead. I think 4 females of similar size would be better.
I don't know if I've even seen them only an inch long, an inch and a half to 2" seems to be what I see most around here, it is possible yours were just too too young to hold their own, that's too bad.
I agree. To me a 'small' female is about 2". Much below that and I'd think the survival rates would not be good, particularly if you just dump them into the display. Anthias benefit enormously from a option of QT; and not even from a disease perspective, but as a way to get them eating well.
