Lyretails?

On my search for schooling/harem Anthias I think I found some Lyretails sold separately as mail and female:

Male:

Female:

IDing Anthias is tough - are these lyretails?

Okay, so they aren't lyretails and they are the squarebacks. So they aren't suitable really.

So my choice is Evansi's or these:

These look like Bartletts but can't be sure:

Any positive IDs there?

Your top pic in your last post are female Lyretails, not sure about the bottom ones though.

Here are my female Lyretails, exactly the same as the ones you posted (color is a little different but they have the same markings):

Here is the male lygretail, notice they have spots on their fins:

You can get a harem of the females and one should turn into a male for you.

So to clarify, you think this is the Lyretail female?

Just that they have this listed as the female of the squareback type. If this is wrong I would be suprised. They have these Evansi's listed as Bartletts:

Those are evansi. As far as P. pleurotaenia females go, it is hard to tell from that pic. They, unlike squamipinnis, have two rows of purplish stripes and a slightly longer dorsal ray. Squamipinnis has a bluish bar under the eye, usually no continuing stripes.

This is tough. :p

I really don't want the squarebacks as I read their colours wash out under bright lighting and I have 400 watters.

Yes, definitely a female squarespot.

And yes, those others are evansi, not bartlett. Much more difficult to care for. Definitely make sure you get bartlett, not evansi, as they are super hardy.

their colors dont wash out due to lighting, but to improper diet and feeding. add spirulina powder to any and all food and you'll have no problems w/ colors and they are getting a good supplement. i have a pair of sunbursts, that have gotten significantly brighter over the years i've had em. and i have them under xm10k 250's, they are out and about as much as any other fish i own, except when my hands enter the tank.

I would like Lyretails but my choice seems limited to the Anthias on this page:

http://natyu.ne.jp/fish/sakana05.html

I'd be interested in getting firm IDs on the bottom two please!

The last photo looks to me like female Lytretails. They have the stripe behind their eye that only goes a short distance and the purple color behind each eye.

The second to last photo looks to be Pale-Bar Anthias (Pseudanthias engelhardi). Never had any experience with them so I am of little help there.

If these really are Lyretail females I could get 5 and one would turn male?

Thats what I have heard but I have no experience in doing that. I do know a few people that have had all females in there tank for over 6 months with no problem and no changes.

They really look like your female lyretails - just a bit more yellow. I can almost make out the line under the eye like yours.

hard to tell

hard to tell

it is hard to tell in that picture is they are different fish. The pink over the eye may lead me to believe they are. The problem is the first shot of that squarebox female doesn't show the color well

BTW: you could do a nice school of squarebox in a tank your size. My school of four lasted 6 years or so. They do not fade in color with halides as I have about 2000 watts and their colors were always amazing. They do get huge though.

good luck
