Macroalgae Smoking!

So I was feeding the fish yesterday and noticed the Pinecone plant ( Penicillus capitatus ) was smoking. Smoking! The whole plant was oozing " smoke".
Took a sample and put it under the microscope. Looked like spores.
Never knew that macroalgae released gametes like corals do. Just never thought about how macros reproduced. Cool! Sat and watched that plant spooge into my tank for 15 minutes. Nerd Alert!

Glad I'm not the only one to take things from my tanks and plop them under the microscope. :)

Most macroalgae have a pretty elaborate lifecycle that includes gamete production and release.

I never thought about plants releasing gametes. That seems unplantlike somehow.
Guess its similar to releasing spores but I was still surprised. :eek2:
It is the Penicillus Pinecone macroalgae and the entire thing was smoking. It looked really cool!

And Emm, glad someone else thought the spooge comment was funny!
:lol2:

Lmao it's tank spooge day. My male blue star leopard wrasse let a nice load on the female. She wasn't too thrilled lolz

I stopped laughing after a few minutes.
A Blue Star Leopard Wrasse? Seriously? I thought those were tough to keep?
And it's attempting to breed in your tank?
Jealous!
I dub thee Sir Wrasse! King of Wrasses! Long may you flash.

Yup they can be very hard to keep. Guess mine had been feelin it lately. Now if she only accepts his gracious offer bahaha
