Mag-Drive 7 pump leaking from cover

Anyone purchase a Mag drive to have it leaking right from the get go from the cover where the O-ring seats? Is there any "quick-fix" for that or is it a return item. I'm using it for my closed-loop. I don't see any evidence of a crack in the cover and the O-ring seems fine.

I don't think that mag drive pumps can be used externally. They are meant to be submerged in water. If they are used out of water, I believe they will always leak.

Is it streaming water or is are you simply seeing salt creep? I get a little salt creep from mine, other than that it works just fine. I did put a new o-ring in it when I started using it externally though, and bought an entirely new impeller housing (the pump is more than ten years old, everything was incredibly worn out.) If it's brand new, take it back.

Dr. Fosters told me that it can be external or submersible. It's not salt creep. It's just a slow drip. Enough to make a small puddle on the shelve like sweat from a drinking glass with ice in it on a hot day. I was thinking about smearing some silicone on the O-ring and see if that would seal it up, but I suppose that would void any warranty.

They can be used externally, but can be hard to keep from leaking. Ive always used silicone on them, but thats up to you.

Remove the cover. Put it back on but screw the screws a little at the time. Turn each one only a little as you would a head gasket. you want to torque them all in together. Work in an across from each other pattern.

I had a Mag 3(same pump body) that all ways weeped water slightly. I think the easiest thing to do would be to replace the o-ring with a fatter one of the same size. The stock o-ring is very thin and doesn't seal well.

I was going to try fixing it this weekend with silicone and using the torque pattern described above. Where did you get the O-Ring? Menards/HomeDepot/Lowes?

Just thought I would let you all know, I found a product Lock-tite makes that is aquarium safe and used a small amount around the cover of the pump. Let it dry for 24 hours and to this point, no leaks. I tested it first on some PVC to make sure that I could remove the parts after it dried since it said "adhesive" on the label. Thanks for all your input everyone.
