Mag flakes

I have all the stuff from that order. :) Switched to reefcrystals and my mag uptake just isn't high enough to need upkeep now.

I'm just gonna grad a bag next time I'm at Lowes, I have to go get some salt for the drive way any how.

I was reading Randy's DIY CA, ALK and mag recipe and didn't want to spend big buck getting everything from BRS. Now I only have to get the CA part there unless someone can tell me a better place to get it.

If by big bucks you mean $17 for 7 gallons worth of two part...The one gallon (7 pound) container makes a lot more than 1 gallon of two part. The 7 gallons is a guess, but it's pretty close. I wanna say you add 2 cups to a gallon of ro water. I'll pay the extra $5-$10 to know that it's reef safe and ready to go.

Two part? I'm not sure what you are talking about. Are we talking about the same thing?
I have never dosed for CA, ALK or MAG befor as I haven't had corals so this is all new to me and I am at a disadvantage here.
How do you make yours?

Calcium

Carbonate (alkalinity)
http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/store/1-gallon-bulk-soda-ash-sodium-carbonate-for-aquariums.html

They come with instructions for how to make the solutions. Like I said, you use well less than 1/4th of each of the containers I linked to make 1 gallon of each. They last me over a year, and I have a fairly high (and increasing) draw on my tank, so if yours is still starting out, they could last a lot longer than that even. Then you go on their website to their calculator, enter your current calcium and alkalinity levels, your total water volume, and then it tells you how many ml of each to add. After shipping, you're looking at spending like $50 for over a year's supply of calcium and alkalinity supplements, and if you need to order stuff like carbon, they have great prices on that too. In my opinion, you really can't beat them for these type of dry goods, and they work perfectly for me in my tank.

+1 for Bulk Reef rather than Lowes, etc. for this type of product. Cloaker, I have extra Mag flakes (1 cup) if you need some quick - I just made up a gallon mix of mag supplement = Mag flakes (5cups) and Epsom salts (3 cups) and that will last me months - maybe a year. This will tide you over until you can pick some up from Ray or another source. I just did 15 gallon water change using Reef Crystals for the first time - the Ca, PH, and ALK were perfect at 1.026 on the reflactometer at 79 degrees - mag was a little low= 800.

OK we are talking about the same thing then.
You prolly have already seen this but here is where I got the recipe http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-02/rhf/index.php
I will be using recipe #2 in place of dow flakes I am going to be getting the CA from BRS for the ALK part I was planning on just using baking soda and the MAG part is what I was looking for and found at Lowes.

I'm in no big rush to get this stuff, I just ordered the test kits for all of them yesterday so I have no idea where the levels are right now.

I have do save every penny I can right now as I am out of work, when I told my wife that I ordered the test kits I could tell that she wasn't too happy about it. I have to be careful how many logs I toss on that fire at one time.

I appreciate all the help, coming up on 3 years now and I feel like a noob, I guess in some areas I still am.

I'll give you a gallon of each to get you started if you want. Just come pick it up some time in Indianola. (and bring two empty milk jugs) You can't beat BRS mainly because they tell you exactly how much to add to achieve a desired level. I'm not sure about you, but I hate doing the math, especially when the potential for catestrophic results exists in your tank.

Ted, you must've misread what I wrote. Since switching to Reefcrystals, my Mag has been high (like 1500 high) which I believe is typical for them. Strange that you were so low. I haven't even opened the ziplock bag that I bought from Ray a year ago to do my own mag supplement. :)

I might just take you up on that, if you would PM me with your address and let me know when is a good time to stop by. It will be nice to see someone else's tank and how they do things. Maybe I could pick up some new tricks.

LOL Try telling her you just bought a new quad! :D

I keep telling her Santa brought it but she's one of those non-believers. :(

Kevin

Just tell her that it is a proven fact that Santa is real. He was a medicine man that brought hallucinogenic mushrooms, and when there was too much snow to get in the door of the hut he came down the chimney. Thats a fact.

yep - getting so old I cant even read anymore. Anyhow- Is that were you are now. Indianola - where is that??!?!? I meant my tank is a little low- since doing the water change it did come up - now at 1100. WOW, I need this break from the office- not going back - other than for the fish tank until Monday. So I will add just a little mag supplement. Will have to do a calculation to figure out how much. Happy new year everyone!!!

Yes, 1100 is a little low- I ADDED about 6 ounces of my Mag supplement - I had the recipe different- 5 cups Epson salts and 3 cups Mag flakes into one gallon of DO/DI - but I could not find that recipe on any site when I was looking for a reef calculator to determine how much I should add to my 90 gallons of reef water. So, I just guessed. I will re- test tomorrow to determien how much it comes up and then judge accordingly.
