Magellan007's 67gal Blog

Finally I'm starting my own tank blog! *exciting*

Originally, I began with a tiny 22gal setup that was initially going to be FW but Emily at ART talked me into saltwater, convincing me that it wasn't hard to do and actually easier than a freshwater tank... SO! for memory lane, here's my first saltwater tank as it looked right before it was taken down:

<a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/cc97/magellan007/919.07.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a>
<hr>

And now...onto my new obsession! The tank is made by AllGlass and measures 36"x18"x24" with 1/4" thick glass and steel reinforcing frames, etc. The stand is 4' high which is nice so you don't have to worry about injuring too many vertibrae when you look at the tank. The canopy has been fitted with 2 large MH, 2 pc, and blue LED lunar lights. There's a Wave 2K wavemaker installed centrally in the back--which is cool and creates superior water movement--and I've got my Korala1 going on the side for extra motion along the arch. There's a Remora AquaC skimmer that, for the time being, is hanging on the back lefthand side (I plant to put it in the sump beneath the tank). I don't have the sump/refugium set up yet; my husband plans on building a bigger one than the 15g he's already made..so if anyone wants that one, just let me know.

There's approximately 80lb of fiji & misc. rock/dead coral--only about 10 of which was base rock--and about +95lbs of black lava sand. (I love this sand, but the only downside was that the wavemaker has blown it away from the front center of the tank, creating a nice, large divot... I hope to be able to place a coral or something there in the future that likes strong water movement, but for now it's a collection zone for rubble and shells--which my hermits love to frequent.)

OK, enough info for now; here's what these things are all about: the pictures!

((just putting in the sand))

look at all its majesty~

I pick up my banded goby today, and my other fish soon after. More pics to come!

Looks good! I really like the arch with the rockwork. Thinking about doing the same with my new tank once I can get some more live rock, moving to a bigger tank made my current rock work look pitiful, but I'm focusing on getting my stand built at the moment so it will have to wait.

Thanks. Will mentioned you making a stand; hope it goes well. I was at Aquariums last night and Leighanne said she's getting a ton of LR.. might check it out.
I need to take a couple pics of the tank at different angles, cuz you can't distinguish the slopes and sideways archs I worked so hard to create.
Got my banded goby in last night; should've taken a picture of him then cuz now he's found the little cave I'd originally made for my jawfish. I asked Will what to name him and we were about to watch Live Free or Die Hard, and noticed that it was totally taking the full force of the wavemaker and not backing down...so his name is Bruce. lol.

New Shots..

New Shots..

Here's some new shots of the tank with the new pc's installed as well as my purdy green hairy mushroom. (the goby is still being shy)

((Full tank shot with the MHs & PCs going.))

Hopefully the weather lets me get my fish back from adam...more to come then!

Oh, btw... I was able to find the adjustment thing for the wavemaker and now the waves aren't as tumultuous.

Clown still enjoying the anemone I take it. Just give those star polyps a minute or two to open up, they were looking 100% yesterday and usually will close up for roughly a week at most when I move em around to new tanks but I bet they start coming out alot sooner than that.

FYI, "squishy" has taken a liking to silversides as well as krill. I fed him every other day for awhile to get him to grow that large that quickly.

Thanks, guys. :)

The green polyps are all open now; noticed them popping out during the night/wee hours of the morning. Now I've got a purdy green lawn frag. :D I'll post a picture of it later today.

Yes, I like the lights.. I think I still prefer the color under the halides, but the corals and fish look brighter under the actinic--I'm just not a big fan of how radioactively blue they make tanks look. I couldn't remember when I got home with them which order you said to put them; was it the violet/actinic in the front and daylight/actinic in the back?

here's a quick pic of the green star polyps w/the anemone more expanded. (I'd had the halides on today and Will flipped the pc's on a couple hours ago and it spread out on the rock even more) I managed to get a shot withOUT magellan nestled in it, lol.

Glad the GSP's are opening up like they should, and I'm impressed you got a photo without the clown, lol, that little bugger wouldn't leave that anemone alone since the moment I stuck em in together.

Tanks looking sweet!

Update

Update

Just a slight update with some new photos. Just did a water change earlier today and was able to fix some rockwork that my jawfish & urchin managed to mess up. (pictures of them and my cleaner below as well as an updated FTS) Hopefully my goby will let me snap a pic of him soon. My blue damsel is beginning to acquire behaviors from the goby; picking at algae off the walls now, and I've seen him pick up a mouthful of sand a couple times...what a follower. lol.

I remember when we first talked at the tank tour and you said that you thought you might have some mushrooms, but you didn't really care about the corals. lol

I sure am glad you came around. :) I think corals of any kind really brighten up the tank.

It looks really good. A few patches of zoas will really add some color.

btw, that's a great shrimp shot. You should enter it in our next photo contest.
