The problem isn't with the amount of light produced by T5 bulbs.
The existing knowledge says that Mags prefer Metal Halides over fluorescent bulbs because they orient themselves to a "point" light source. If they don't have that point light source they tend to wander around the tank and get themselves in trouble or never seem to thrive since they are always moving around.

I would be interested to see if the old dogma still holds up with the recent improvements in light sources.

I've seen a few kept under ATI fixtures with no issues.. A local guy to me has had one for probably 6 years under a 6x 80w powermodule .I'll see if I can dig up a picture for you or stop by and snap one. The only prospering under halides is news to me but I guess it's because I never really looked into it..

Imo a proper t5 fixture will keep any coral you could ever want. Especially with 350 par on the sand bed like myself and others have measured but maybe like stated it's really not the intensity..

Most of the time Mags will position them selves right under the the halide bulb and if water flow is right they don't move often is my experience. And I'm going on 2 years with my current one

I held a Mag for my friend under T5 for about 3 months and it never moved from the inverted mug I had it on.

Before I put this Mag under T5 it was under a Lumenarc with a halide and didn't move under the bulb in a few months and stayed off to the side where it was put.

He has a different Mag in his display that was switched from a Radion LED(point source) to a T5 Sunpower and it hasn't moved in about 6 months or so.

Neither example has been over a year yet, but I doubt that matters. They seem to move more to get the right flow if it isn't right.

I used the mug to prop the Mag closer to the lights...........it was my frag tank with only two 54w T5s.

I colored it up for him and then he sold it.

Well I can say the Big E nem safely made the transition from the T-5s to my 250 W Halides as I bought the Mag off of fellow RC and Mag expert Tony (AD87). He has colored up even more under the Halides since that picture and he is close to them sitting about 3-4 inches under the surface of the water with the halides about 10 inches above the tank.

Funny part is he seems so happy I have not had the heart to remove him from the stinkin inverted mug... he is still on the mug! He just must feel safe and secure luckily the mug fits in a nice spot securely I just figured he would move up the rock on his own.

And yes the cup is growing coraline algae on it... it is white so it is quickly turning purple and if he doesn't move off may become a permanent part of my rock!

That's awesome Craig.............I told Tony just take the mug and all because I wanted to make sure you got the nem with the less stress possible.

You can always put some zoas underneath to cover the mug too.

Great to hear it's coloring up more .........I figured it would with more lighting.

T5s are great with magnificas. I have had mine under T5s for 5 years or so. No movement, I had them under MHs before and I consider T5 to be preferable. I have mine under ATI bulbs in an ATI fixture. However, for a couple of years they were under a Tek and did fine there too. If the Tek isn't equipped with a fan, you should research fans as cooler bulbs last longer and have higher output.
