Major Problem in my Tank

Yes, I am running the poly filter, it is still mostly white, just some algae stains from when I shoved it in between the baffles of the sump. How often should I change the carbon?? It has been running for a few days now

Yes, the clarity was amazing once the carbon took effect. I use Oceanic salt

No, have never used GFO but my phosphates were always at 0.

Will continue to monitor the tank, this morning I saw that one of my last remaining cap corals that was bleaching around the edges is now starting to color back along one part. It is now only 3/4 white around the edge instead of 100%

Normally, carbon can be left running for a month or so. In your situation, I would change it out sooner, the second batch of carbon could be left in for the month.

Unless you had your phosphate level tested with a colorometer, it is likely not 0. Using GFO is the only way to bring it down that low.

Hang in there.

I brought the tank water into ATR for testing with their colorometer as I do not have one myself. I will change out the carbon on Monday as it will have been almost 1 week and the leave the new batch in for about 1 month.

Will do some research on GFO.

Thanks for the advice

Just a quick update. The tanks seems to be getting better. I lost the blasto, completely dead, but the acro that was 1/2 bleached seems to have stopped bleaching, the half that is alive seems to be getting better. Also the tyree strawberry cap that was bleached all around the edge has fully recovered and there is no more white showing. The large favia seems to be getting a little fleshier.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions, it really helped me get the tank healthier than I could have done by myself.

As for the cause of the problem, I think I will call it unknown outside contamination.

If another week goes by with more improvement, I will try to put a cheap acro frag in there to see how it does.
