Major Problems need help

Chiller

Chiller

WOW! if that is the case you are very lucky... Best of luck on them... all the more reason now for me to find a way to fix my chiller.

Any Chiller that has the old style freon (R12) I think, You may as well throw it in the trash as the freon is no longer avaiable or being made/sold anymore.
A friend of mine already checked into getting one charged and this is what he found. The Freon will cost more than the chiller is worth if you can find anyone willing to charge it for you.
I have found with a couple of fans and keeping your house at a reasonable temp, Not running your lights too long there is no need for a chiller IMO.

Your right bill r12 is $300-$400 for small propan tank size. If you can find it. I had a old freezer that use it at the restaurant. And last year it need to be filled. Now it's setting in my moms basement not working. I think yours takes the r31 and if yours has a small leak there is a r31something Freon that you can put in that will plug up the leak. But you cant do it yourself only if you have a scale. The guy that works on my restaurant equipment will work on it for you. If you need. He's a friend and save my alote of money.

Alas.. it uses r134a! I have gauges, and our maint guy here can do it as well. as it stands now, I have put some superseal in it, but it must not have water in the housing for that to work. I found that out about half way thru after I had recharged it. this stuff reacts to the air and the moisture and then seals the metal leaks. i still have a very little ammt of refrigerant in there as I have halfway decent high pressure, but very little low pressure. Im going to add one last can of refrigerant to it and cycle it dry (running for 2 mins max)for the evening then watch it. Hopefully that will get it done. I read an article where an engineer at a FORD motor plant used it in a chiller for oil in a lathe machine. water passed around the coil, then thru an oil tank. it sealed it up. hopefully I can get it this time.

im also armed with the specs from current on the pressures so I can get it close to there. if this dont work, then yes, I am looking for a new unit. I found one on ebay but it uses r-22 so that makes it expensive.

probably too late but evaporative cooling is crazy efficient. agitate the crap out of the surface and create as much surface area as possible.....maybee an additional temporary sump that is shollow or running water over a plate or lid in your sump. If they set dehumidifiers this will make the cooling even better. just keep an eye on the water level....it is evaporative:)

Glad things are looking up Justin. Hope they continue that way.

What year did chiller manufacturers start using the newer version of freon?

Chris I think the Law changed last year as to them no longer being able to Mfg it anymore. There are still Chillers being sold that have that old Freon but It's not a wise choice as to it needing a charge.
My AC guy told me a gallon size tank Is already going for over 600.00 and that would be cheap in a short time. FYI

R134a

R134a

Thanks Bill, I just went and checked my Aqualogic and it's r134a:)

That's the good one, Just had that put on the House this year and It works great. Cools very well and won't cost a fortune to get it charged if it needs it.
Your Chiller must not be that old to have the new freon but good none the less.

Well it looks like I am going to end up losing several pieces of SPS wont know really untill I get this thing regulated. We will probably see what the full amount of damage has been then.

I hate to hear that man.

The Slimer and purple acro that I got from you a few meetings ago are doing well, and I should be able to frag them for you in a couple of weeks if you need. They will not be large frags, but if you lose those pieces, at least it would be a start.

Hate to hear it justin. hope it all gets worked out for you and the tank. didnt mean to hijack the thread or at least bump it in another direction.

Wouldn't running the AC do better than the heater? The AC basically acts like a dehumidifier since the moisture condenses on the coils and then goes down the drain.

I just did what serve pro said to do. I had 25 pieces of equipment in my house spread into every room pretty much. All these dehumidifiers blowing 120 degree heat and fans. It was a mess adn still is. All the epuipment was turned off last night and the tank and house have cooled back down and stabilized. So i guess over the next 2-3 days i will see what happens. I know some have already died I will jjst wait and see what happens after now.

I was going to do a water change tonight or tomorrow any thoughts on that? I just dont want to shock them any more. I will be testing all my water parms tonight when i get home to see what is going on if anything. First thing will be to remove all the dead ones and go from there i suppose.

Any advice now that the crisis has passed would be great.

I would also like to say thanks to everyone that has offered help during this time. You guys have been great.

I would say yes on the water change along with running carbon and skimming heavily for a few days if you have the ability.

Chris

If you need an emergency chiller take a cooler, fill it with ice, run a coil of hose thru the cooler
hook a pump to it, run back to sump. Emergency chiller.
