Male bangaii by itself?

Setting up a 10 gallon for a holding male currently in my 90. Should I remove only the male or remove both male and female? Is the pairing in jeopardy if only the male is removed? Thank you

I've removed only the male, after about 20-25 days of holding and had him separated for up to 10 days (hatch plus a few more to feed him extra after his fast). They get back together as soon as I return him to the tank. Usually they breed again in 1-2 weeks.

Thanks. I'm hoping this will go term on day 12 now holding? Thought I should set up the 10 and have the brine shrimp at the ready.

Hope he carries them all the way! Mine usually holds for 27-32 days before releasing them. Just make sure to feed them within the first 12 hours of being released, the sooner the better. Oh, and make sure that the brine shrimp you feed them have been hatched less than six hours. After six to eight hours brine shrimp lose their egg sac and you must enrich them before feeding in order to supply the HUFA's that the baby banggais need for their development. Best of luck!

I feel as though I should remove both male and female and have them out of display. Why put him back in display to have to catch him again?

From my experience, the male will hold out for 2-3 days before he starts to eat the young. The mother however I've seen eat some the first day they hatch. So while you don't have to separate the male immediately, you will have to within the first couple days or he will consume the young.

I would only remove the male, as the female will eat the young. The male is ok for a day or two with the young but after that he needs to be separated as well, so I would move him back to the display. Mine spends about a week out of the display to release the young and get a couple extra feedings, then back to the display for 3-4 weeks till he's ready to release again. It is a bit if a hassle, but it's a bit easier to catch him by flipping the lights on briefly at night, so he is groggy and a bit stunned.

The other option, if you want to keep the couple together, is to get one of those small breeder boxes that you can capture the male in and hold him in there in the display tank where the female can still see him and then just release him and remove the young to another tank...

Thanks again really appreciate your input.I do have a small breeder box,so maybe I'll put him in that and then when he releases, put him back in display after a few good feedings. Ofcourse remove the fry when released and place them directly in the 10 gallon.

Setting up the 10 gallon today and wondering if I remove the male, would he spit out the fry? It would be early so should I hold off a little longer? Not really positive how long he's holding but it would be in the 15-20 day area? Thanks

As long as you don't stress him out excessively he should be fine. I've even been late and slowly corralled him into a container and moved him when the babies are already hatched and swimming in his mouth. If the babies aren't hatched yet then he should most likely hold onto them just fine.

If you haven't already, putting something in the 10 gallon for them to hide in will help them feel comfortable. As simple as a piece of wide pvc pipe or more elaborate like a diy fake urchin will work, just so both the father and the young don't stress out about being exposed in the wide open of an empty tank.

Tank set up with live rock from display, hob aquaclear with sponge over intake as well as a very small hydor powerhead. I found some plastic grass I had from years ago and glued it to a peice of rubble. Will do just fine I think for an "urchin". Wanting to remove the male but hesitant..haha.

Holy Moly. The 2 pieces of live rock I put in the tank are full of mini brittle stars.............An absolutely huge number.....I'm guessing 50-60 all over the top of tank and the 2 rocks. Will this be a problem if the fry are successfully released in the tank. Can't believe the number of stars!!!!!

Impressive! Haha, no the brittle stars won't bother them. They'll help with some of the cleanup, as between their numbers and feeding requirements the young make a decent mess. I would try to gather some of them and move them back to the display just cause they're such awesome little scavengers to have around :)

Took me about a minute to catch the male and he is now in the 10 gallon. Stress gone lol. He did not release so now waiting game. This is so much fun..yeah right.

Haha, well done! Yes, much waiting involved... Wait for breeding, wait for hatch, wait for bbs to hatch, wait for young to grow... But they are adorable mini versions of the parents! Plus, it's nice to be breeding fish that have a endangered wild population!! Besides, everyone else is already doing the clown thing ; )

Thanks love banggais. Will keep the updates going. Male still holding as of now. Have the brine shrimp on the go. Need to hit the store tomorrow to get some selcon. Also need to have 2 batches going so there is always a supply. The fun never ends.haha
