Male bangaii by itself?

Awesome!! Should have babies within the week :) Have they hatched yet? Should start seeing them swimming in his mouth real soon... See little faces poking out between his lips and sometimes even tiny tails poking out from his gills. I've read the "average" is to release around 25-28 days, but mine often holds for 30-35 days even.

Pretty cool, I thought the eggs would have hatched within a week or so? And the males would incubate until they are ready? Is this wrong? Much like mouthbrooding cichlids I thought?

The eggs incubate for almost three weeks in the males mouth before hatching, then they stay in his mouth and grow/use up their egg sacs for several days until he begins releasing them. He usually releases at night/early morning (as Banggais seem to be more active nocturnally) and often in small groups instead of all at once. I've had mine release in up to 3 or 4 groups, sometimes over two days. I've had anywhere from 20-35 babies so far.

Put in a few frozen shrimp(just to see what would happen...30 days!!) and the male yawned and for the first time my son and his girlfriend saw the babies in his mouth. I wasn't in the room at the time.so confirmed...lol Five minutes later my sons girlfriend ( who has become intrigued) said "there's one in the tank"!!! SO yes indeed there is one out swimming around. Now the male still holding the rest. This was 9 hours ago. What to expect next? Figured I'd let him do his thing and continue to wait? Will he release the fry SOON or should I intervene and let him spit them in a net? Input appreciated...........

Congrats! I'd just let him be, he likely will release them tonight or in the morning. He may spit out small groups of them over time. He will let them out as he sees fit, and won't eat them for a couple days at least. As soon as they are out start feeding them some bbs :) Best to feed them as often as possible in several small meals throughout the day, but try to feed at least 2-3 times a day.

Oh, also I would recommend feeding the male extra for the next several days once he starts eating. Have to build him up after his long fasting! You could move him to a quarantine tank if you have one, or a breeder box in the tank with his mate for a couple days to feed him, or just try to feed him extra little meals in the display, if the other residents allow it. I try to feed him at least double for three days minimum, then extra snacks when possible.

Thanks, hoping he releases today sometime bbs is at the ready. The little guy actually took some last night. I have a plastic aquarium from Walmart that I drilled holes in and that's attached to main tank. He'll be going in that after release and will be fed heavy before going back in display with female. Ideally I'd like to set up a small tank for them both but we'll see. Yes it was quite exciting to see the little guy swimming around. I have a feeling that he snuck out by mistake.lol

I feel like I should net this guy, I mean 30-32 days what is going on? Net him and let him release they have to be starving.

Mine averages holding about 30 days, has gone as far as 35. I usually just let him be, but you shouldn't have any issues if you want to get then out, just try to to stress them too much. I've heard some people will try to gently grab his tail and softly shake him side to side to get him to release... Personally if it's been too long I just start squirting tiny amounts of bbs in the tank occasionally, and if the young or the male are hungry enough they will be released.

Thanks again man. In the meantime will [post some pics. The male is coming out of that tank tomorrow..........Will go for it and let you know how it goes.

Ticked off with myself. Had the male inj the hang on enclosure and I wanted to move it further to the left side of the tank and he got in main display. No sweat telling the difference in the M/F as she is noticeably larger. Just what I did not want to happen.

He is holding already and I'm afraid he won't make it. I mean he ate very little and fasted for 30 plus days. Will he spit them out before his physical health is in jeopardy? Thanks

I've read that you can feed the babies Cyclopeeze and don't have to go through the hassle of hatching BBS. Is that correct? My female is filled up with eggs again and I suspect the male will be holding in a the next few days. She's been doing her little dance for him lately and I can see that her belly is really dark.

I haven't decided if I'm going to try and raise the fry or not. The LFS in my area said they don't accept fish from hobbyists, even for trade, so I'm not sure what to do with them if I do raise them.

Good luck with yours Megatrev62!

Thanks. I have frozen cyclops but didn't try them, I think they are too big. I have 10 fry doing really well and I'm alternating newly hatched bbs and newly hatched bbs that I freeze. All taking the frozen which is good. I have a runt in the litter that stays to himself but I don't know if he'll last. Seems to me to be blind!!! Bumps into rock here and there when feeding. He does seem to be eating though.

I am going to post pics soon I hope............................

Spyder.. try raising them it's pretty cool seeing the babies grow!!!!! Also sell them through the classifieds!!!!
