male clown pop eye and buoyancy issue

Hi guys..

Tank is a 4'x18"x16" been set up with just live rock for about 2 or 3 months now. About a week ago I got the offer of a free pair of percs, which i gladly took. At first, the female was very agressive towards the male (they had been living in harmony in the last tank), but after the first day she backed off and left him alone.

However, now my male has his right eye swollen, and appears to have trouble getting away from the surface of the water. He doesn't seem to keen on the food either. Can't remember exactly what brand the food is, but some form of small pellet which they have been eating in the last tank for about 2 months.

A few days ago I did about a 25 litre water change with NSW (I know most of you guys aren't too keen on NSW, but here in Perth almost everyone uses it). Admitedly the salinity is a bit high (1.030), so I'm about to top it up with RO water.

Any ideas? I'm going to also try feeding with some frozen mysis, as I read somewhere that tainted food can cause buoyancy issues.

Test your water for the full range of stuff you test for. The pop-eye is something that will go away with good water quality and nutrition.

If you're going to use NSW, you should check into proper quarantine procedures for it.

Scott,

I suspect water quality based on the information in the single post. Sizeable upward swings in SG trigger all kinds of osmotic events. Symptoms of such events include, buoyancy, popeye, lethargy, etc.

Bring the SG down slow, keep it stable and best of luck.

Well I woke up this morning and he was swimming about 1 to 2 inches below the surface just fine. I'll fix up the salinity this afternoon though. Thanks for your help
