Mantis and a Coral Banded Shrimp?

I a friend of mine gave me his 58 gallon setup. I have a 10 gallon setup for my wennera mantis. The 58 gallon came with a coral banded shrimp. I want to combine the 2 tanks. Will my mantis get along with the CBS?

I've seen them live together in a tank for months, particularly when the shrimp has a safe refugium such as a thin crack behind a filter up off the substrate. However, the shrimp will always be vulnerable and the chances are that sooner or later the stomatopod will kill it.

Stranger things have happened. One that reminds me of this is a story on lurkers guide of a pair of cleaner shrimp living with a stomatopod in its burrow in a seamingly peaceful coexistance. I doubt a smasher would be willing to make this kind of symbotic relationship, but like Dr. Roy said, they can hide. I remember someone who kept peppy shrimp with a mantis and they hid behind a skimmer during the day. i think it was either mattyice or justinl, but I'd have to go archive searching to find out.

monte would never allow another crustacean of any kind in her aquarium, coral banded shrimp arent a good shrimp to put with stomatopods...lets just say the the coral banded shrimp pinches the mantis and the mantis gets mad and then just rips the claws off and then all you have is a spiney peppermint shrimp

my experience with mantis shrimp is...O. Scyllarus do not like anything in their territory...

lol wasnt me, I wouldnt be very surprised if my lil trogdor allowed a pep to live long... he's not so big himself. i remember that story too, can't remember who it was though. thurge maybe?

It was me!!! They lived behind the skimmer.
I think its important to note that peaceful coexistance was NOT my intention (and I have done it more than once). I added the shrimp to rid the tank of Aptasia. The shrimp placed in the tank when the mantis was molting, and then I fed the mantis well when it reemerged. I fully anticipated that the Peppermint shrimp would be eaten in short order, they were just "smart" enough to recognise a place where they could go and their predator couldn't.
I have subsequently added a peppermint shrimp (fished out of my reef) to Squirtle's tank and he made short work of inviting it over as dinner. I would also like to note I have noticed I have a Bumble Bee snail that is living in his tank. Again this was added as food on the move, but it has used its nocturnal tendancies to its advantage by being tucked into small crevaces by the time Squirtle has woken up.

i think monte is just too smart to let prey get away, she has fully dug under rocks to get to a teddy bear crab i dropped in the tank, and i mean creating a whole new burrow just to get to the crab because she wanted it dead

Density Man's Tim had three peps for awhile there; Moe, Larry, and Curly. They were able to stay in the tank for awhile, mostly hiding in crevices in the upper areas of the LR then coming out to forage at night. It was when Tim finally got Moe that things snowballed and before long they were all added to Tim's list of victims.

I got 5 sexy/dancing shrimp in a 1.5 by 1 foot tank. They've lived there quite happily with my Peacock mantis.

But the banded coral shrimp I had before lasted about 1 week before my G. Glabrous ate him.
