Do they get along?I think I might have both in my tank.I was looking under the tank at the sand bed and seen a pistol shrimp.Then I am almost positive I seen a Mantis under the same rock...They cleared out alot of sand from under the rocks.As soon as they seen the flash light they took off. I hear so many snapping sounds it 's not funny.Sounds like my son is taking 2 cue balls and smacking them together. They are hitchhikers.Never bought a shrimp yet.

Well, I could not get a clear look at what looked to be a Mantis shrimp but I am positive the other one was a pistol shrimp. I hear the snapping but never see the shrimp.Any trick to getting them to come out so I can see them?I cant use food because my fish eat it before it hits the sand.
Getting out a pistol shrimp may pose an interesting problem. Mantis are actually somewhat easier. The "standard technique" is to take a 16-ounce water or soda bottle, cut the top off (just below where the bottle reaches full width); then invert the top into the rest of the bottle. The cut-off top part will be held in by tension. Add bait (piece of shrimp, krill, squid, whatever) and place the opening near the rock.
The idea is that the opening is easy to find on the way in, but is "suspended" and hard to find on the way out.
