I've been on this board for over a year now but never ventured into the mantis shrimp forum. I recently acquired one for a friend and am wondering if anyone can help me identify what species this possibly is. Also, if you can give me any info on it. I'm going to start reading all these posts tonight before I get mine. Thanks!

Hey DZ,

Looks like mine! Odontodactylus Scyllarus? (a.k.a. Clown or Peacock mantis) That's a very red one though. Ours is olive overall, which I've read here is typical of a female.

hth!

It is indeed a female Odontodactylus scyllarus. They occure in the tropical Indo-Pacific from Guam to the East African coast. Most animals in the aquarium trade are currently coming out of Indonesia. Years ago it was more common to see them coming from Sri Lanka, the Philippines and Okinawa. They live in short, u-shaped burrows in sandy - rubbly bottoms at depths from 2 - 30 meters. Maximum size is around 18 cm.
