Mantis ID

Well, its not the usual N wennerae or N. bredini. The pairs of white spots are quite unusual. Do you know where it came from? If it is from the Caribbean, my guess would be N. curacaoensis, but I would want to see more detail including the meral spots before making a positive id.

It came as a hitchiker on my LR which is Fiji and Marshall Island LR. It's in a separate aquarium now, although I'm not sure if it's still alive as I haven't seen him in a couple of days since switching him into the new aquarium. He's only about an inch long.

I have seen these white spots occasionally on juvenile Gonodactylus smithii. If you see the animal again, try to get a look at the meral spots on the inside of the striking appendages. If this is G. smithii, they will be white with a purple or blue center. If they are all white, I would have to see the specimen to id it.

G. chiragra are common in the Indo-Pacific west of Fiji. They are very common in northern Australia, Indonesia and Thailand.
