Hey Guys,

I have been doing A LOT of research over the past days on keeping mantis shrimp. I want to start up my un used pico from a while ago and dedicate it to a mantis shrimp tank...I was wondering if i can put a mantis in my 1g pico tank..I got this idea from this guy on NR that had his mantis in his 1g pico... is this possible???

and yes it will be just a mantis in there w/plenty live rock

i can really use your help...thanks

Sorry but, no. At least a 2.5 gallon or the JBJ 3g pico which is $40.

it also depends on what mantis your're getting. post a pic of one.

woops i just measured the capacity of the tank and it is
a 2g all glass tank..it is already cycled and i need some tips on what one to get??? the spearer or the smasher type???
thanks for replying

i wouldnt recomend putting a mantis in a tank that small. but if you must then i would go with a N. Wennerae wich is a smasher and is very easily abtained from most LFS.

again i dont recomend you putting it in a tank that small but i guess it is better then them being in small containers at the store. just make sure to get a real small one.

I can agree about NOT putting a mantis in a small tank. First off, even a small mantis is a pretty big bioload for such a small capacity, therefore, you're probably looking at doing a lot more water changes than you normally would on a small tank and hope that your high nitrates and nitrites don't have any adverse effect on the mantis. Just my two cents, don't think i haven't thought about it though! :)

thanks guys...
for the water changes i plan on doing 1/3 water change every
3 days from my main tank so im hoping the mantis i get wont get tooo big

why do a water change by adding water from your main tank? i am confussed....is this tank not cycled yet?

This sounds like a bad idea. How can you have lots of live rock when you have a 2g capacity? You need to get a bigger tank in order for this to be fair for the mantis. I know because they are hardy and can live in relatively small tanks its easy to say that they can live in almost any tank but that is not true. 5g+ in my opinion.
