Hello all A fellow reefer on here is going to be sending me a mantis shrimp by mail Dr. Roy I believe told him sending him in a plastic bottle 1/2 full of water would be fine. No dout it will but my question is with the weather being EXTREMELY hot in my area would a cold pack of some sort be needed or can they handle heat ok? If one is needed where could I get one. Thanks in advance Bill

Have them send it later in the day and have it marked for "hold for pick-up" at a local shipping center. Something else you can consider is having it send express overnight for a morning delivery (but you will Pay for that).
Someone else may be able to give you some help with cool packs.

Having the bottle half full of water is a bit much. One quarter to one third would be better.

Temperature is a problem. I don't know what species you are shipping, but many tropical species will die if they spend a few hours below 20 C. However, temperatures above 28 C will accelerate oxygen use. If you can't hold off until it is cooler - or ship overnight, one small blue ice pack in a 2 gallon styrofoam container is about right. Make sure the container with the stomatopod is not in direct contace with the blue-ice.

Thank you very much for your responses I think we are gonna try the blue freeze pack method. Ill keep you posted how it worked. Oh yea its going from California to Illinois. Lets keep our fingers crossed. Thanks again Bill

a styrofoam cooler pack with an freezer icepack, and being shipped out at night, got my Hogchoker Sole to my doorstep in So Cal from Florida in excellent shape. I know I'm comparing apples to oranges here, but it can give you an idea of temps in the container. This was only 2 weeks ago.
