Firstly, I would like to say that I am aware that many of you dislike or even hate 6th Ave Aquarium. We already know this, so PLEASE do not spam my thread with redundant comments regarding this. I am trying to find these creatures good homes, as I am at my limit with nine of the little monsters. thanks in advance.

6th Avenue Aquarium has four mantis shrimp currently.

A Peacock (O. scyllarus), about 3", priced at around 30 bucks.

2 G. chiraga, 2.5" or so, priced at 20 bucks or so.

And...

A L. maculata (Marked as Zebra mantis), at 40 bucks. It is about 8" or so, so it must be a younger one. From the length of the dactly-spears, it looks like a male, but I am not sure.

I am not sure on the sex of any of them, and this is the first time that I have seen a L. macluata. It was gorgeous.

It was hard to not decide to start up ANOTHER tank for the L. maculata. None of mine are the right dimensions, though, being longs in design. This gorgeous critter deserves a properly set-up home.

well I'm not going to spam any anti-6th avenue stuff, but if the place is that bad you do realize that "rescuing" creatures only tells them that people are willing to buy them so they'll get more to replace those that are sold.

how do you transport those things? id be into the peacock for sure but im scared he'll eat me on my bart ride home

a bag . . .

a bag . . .

lol. i took the peacock home in a bag!! and yes, i was and am afraid . . . he is amazing.

i will post some pics sometime, btw - the zebra is nutz! about 8"+ and tuff looking - a killa!

take care.

When I was in Italy, we ate something at dinner that I believe was called squilla. They were all big, 8"+. I'm assuming they were mantis! :(

Plastic bags work, though they should be doubled because of possible punctures. When I take one home, I have them double bagged, then I put the bag in a plastic container (Tupperware works fine...), then that in my Chrome backpack. The only thime that I have beenn hit was when transferring my second G. chiraga, she got me when I was carelessly taking off the outer bag. Bone bruise, but no breaks.

And yes, 'Squilla' is mantis shrimp.

Mantids are yummy.
I second Mike - while I understand the impulse to rescue these animals, doing so only gets the store to order more.
