bought a cool new rock last month, its had crabs of all shape and sizes cruzing around. its houses emerald craps, porcelian crabs, pistol shrimp (15ish pound rock)
with all the critters that live in this rock, i was surprized it also housed a green mantis shrimp. i've seen crabs crawl in and out of his hole dozens of times.
first time i saw him, i was looking for the 3 porcelien crabs (very small) that are sometimes seen. i only caught his eyes, but it was enough to know i had a mantis.

at first i tried luring him out, i loaded up a bamboo skewer with krill and tried to get a good look at him. the little thief came flying out the hole, grabbed the krill from the skewer (i inserted it the full length of the krill) and retreated to the hole in a cloud of krill.
needless to say i couldn't get him to show his face again for 2 days.lol.
i kept an eye on the hole and eventually i saw him again. figured, i'm quicker, smarter, and dam it alot better looking than this mantis shrimp, i can lure him out with a piece of shrimp, and skewer the little jerk. (he's in with my pipefish, a risk im not willing to take)

well i was wrong, and now i had a very well fed mantis shrimp. :(

set up the good old mantis in a bottle rig. the mantis laughed it off and resurface in a second hole just below the bottle.

and the new plan unfolded.

i set up my net covering the second hole, twisted a peice of wire (NOT COPPER) and pushed the mantis right out the hole. he shot out like a rocket, and straight into the net!

i am quicker, smarter than a mantis, but for a shrimp, it sure is a looker. :P
into the sump he went, where he's easy to remove. he's still small so im not to worried about the tank, but he sure did a number on the bbq skewer. :)

well i found 3 that it does looks like. lol
Gonodactylaceus falcatus
Gonodactylellus viridis
Pseudosquilla ciliata

it doesnt look anything like Neogonodactylus wennerae on the reefcentral pic's but i've viewed a handful from other sites that look the similar (males and females look different and they change color to match suroundings)
identifing it will be harder than i thought. i had no idea there where so many different types that look the same to the untrained eye.

n. berdni wasnt even on my list.lol
i'm gonna leave the iding to the pro's, you guys.
thanks

well he makes clicking noises and smashed the heck out of the skewer.
do the ones that spear also make clicking noises? he was definatly striking the skewer.
other than that, i dont have much experiance with them. never got a close enough look at the weapon to see if they had spikes.

I'm learning about these too...I'm going to assume that the spearers don't make noises..but I'm not sure about that. Are you going to keep him? I might be interested in buying him but I'd like to know what kind he is first.

No problem..preciate it though. I would go with N. Bredini. Your first two picks are Pacific dwellers.

If it is Cuban, there are three or species of Neogonodactylus that it could be. It is definitely a gonodactylid.

My first guess would be N. wennerae, but it could be N. austriunus, N. torus, or a couple of other rareer species. The key to iding it will be the telson and the color of the meral spots. I will assume the spots are white and that it has two large blunt teeth on the telson. If so, it is N. wennerae. It is unlikely to be N. bredini from Cuba. That species occurs more to the south and east.

the spots seem to be more a yellow or off white in color, than white.

i was told it was a cuban shipment but im not possitive. the other crabs on the rocks are what i believe to be green matrix crabs (tiny crabs1/4"-1" in size. green bumpy shells, and striped legs) the filter feeding crabs look like my purple porcelian crab but a much darker brown.

i got the rock hour after it arrived in the lfs. do these crabs and sea lettuce fit the profile of a rock from the cuban area?
also the rock is filled with tiny 1" pistol shrimp. brown and white claws, black stripes on the tail.

do you have a pic ot the "two large blunt teeth" if i knew what i was looking for, i might be able to answer your questions alittle better (or get a pic)

thanks for all your help guys. these critters really are interesting.

Go to Roy's List and look at the telson of N. bredini. There are four teeth, but the median two are longer and blunt. The ones on the outside are shorter and blunt. Now look at N. oerstredii. The four teeth are sharp and more equal in size. N. bredini and N. wennerae have the large, blunt median teeth. Almost all of the other Caribbean Neogonodactylus have the sharper, more equal teeth.
