March Meeting something NEW!

Honestly, I am a bit surprised at everyone's reactions since this essentially does nothing but benefit the club and those that participate, which is the goal....right? What I really think everyone is upset about is the decreased odds of winning.

Although the past several years have been great, I think the general thought was that it would be nice to put a little additional in the coffers for the next board so that perhaps we could try some new and different things that are more capital intensive such as a field trip, etc. To call it greedy is a gross misstatement since the intention is to use additional $ for the members. As the economy declines, we are going to have to count less and less on the generosity of other's donations, etc.

I do agree that the club doesn't need to make 3-4x the amount. However, since the club will have to pay retail for the item, it will likely only net 1x the amount. Perhaps we should consider a time limit. If all 200 don't sell by X date, we revert the proceeds to a 50/50 raffle. Just a thought....

Eric if you can find me a BRAND NEW AC3 pro with a DC8, pro temp probe, and lab grade ph probe for 500.00 ill take one today !! let me know when you find that ... Sean

I swear you guys are super sensative when it comes to discussing anything on here. I paid for some tickets and I will leave it at that.

Odds of 200-1 are not very bad odds. I have no problem with the club making 3x times or even 4x times the amount on the raffle. If I do then I don't buy a ticket. My plan is to buy a ticket at every meeting till the drawing 10 bucks a month for a chance to win 500 or 600 or even 700 dollars worth of merchandise is far better than spending 10 dollars to win a 50.00 frag which I also do every month. If the club has more money in it's treasury then it will benefit the members in larger monthly raffles, better speakers, more colonies for the frag workshop etc. etc.
Let's just be glad that we have a club that is growing and that we can have the chance to win an aquacontroller AC3 Pro for a 10.00 ticket.

I think its funny how while at a meeting no one speaks up ever about this stuff but on Reefcental everyone has something to say ..............

Odds of injury from mowing the lawn: 3,623 to 1

Odds of injury from using a chain saw: 4,464 to 1

Odds of getting a hole in one: 5,000 to 1

Odds of bowling a 300 game: 11,500 to 1

Odds of being struck by lightning: 576,000 to 1

Odds of getting a royal flush in poker on first five cards dealt: 649,740 to 1

I'm still liking 200 to 1. :) I will probably be in the area of 5 chances in 200. I have tried corals for $15 that have about 1 in 4 chance of dying in my tank

It looks like that AC3 PRO kit is $747.80 so it would be a bit more than doubling the money.

When we raffle items that are donated it is all profit and nobody has ever mentioned it before. I think it shouldn't be a big deal and nobody should be offended over this. Let's just try to keep it fun and participate if you want .... or not :)

The key word in all of this is FUN.

I voiced my opinion before the meeting, at the meeting and on reef central. Sorry you didn't hear it until reefcentral Sean. It's just my opinion.

I have no need for a controller as I bought a new one a month or so ago, I'm tossing in my 20 bucks just for the club as I don't expect to win one and don't need one.

Sean, Jeff and tom, you've got mail
Erik

I understand Erik I too just shelled out over 1100 dollars worth of neptune gear only a few months ago myself.....But its not about me!!! Or you for that matter ...its for the Club members which is why i decided not to buy into this raffle and instead donated 47 dollars to the raffle last friday Again for the Club...

I could see some getting upset if we proposed dramatic increases to membership fees or something along those lines. However, this is something completely voluntary that will ultimately benefit the club as a whole. I guess I am just dense but I don't get why the fuss.

Although the club is not in dire need of $, its blatantly clear in every newspaper around that dark times lie ahead. Why not ensure the club has money in the event things get lean. And if we are fortunate that they don't, a little extra money in the coffers will afford future boards a little more flexibility in trying new ideas out that may have cost prohibitive in the past. Either way, I think its a win / win for our members.

I did miss hear/read that the unit was the pro unit. Which makes the price range a more even money maker for the club. Hopefully this works well for the club and we continue to do this type of thing in the future. Maybe next time bring it up at a meeting and get the clubs input on things, like which item, who wants what? what does the majority of the club members need for there tank.
I no a lot of club members don't like to voice there opinion in a public manor such as reef central when there opinion can be disputed. I no that my opinion was that of others I just was the one to post it is all. Sorry to have stirred the pot on this. I just new in the past more then 5k in the bank was a number we didn't want to go much over and things may have changed since we actually filed for non profit. So the guide line from the past could of been wrong.
Even if I don't agree on the 200 number, hats off to actually doing something new guys.
Erik

We've lost over 2k this year because of increasing costs and bills that were left unpaid by last years treasurer. I've been wanting to do the financials at a meeting, but things were so screwed up when I got them it's taken me this long just to get a handle on things.

I am hoping that the swap and this raffle help us break even this year. I only see costs going up and up. We were really lucky that our speakers charged very little, most charge 1k each plus room/board.

If everyone could just be nice to each other until after the swap it'd be super and I would appreciate it....I just want to make it through this swap in one piece, and without a nervous breakdown.

Thanks

I think we are all grown adults here and can get along with each other. Sometimes things can get a little heated at times. I was just joking about the sensitivity on this board, so hope no one take it to heart. 200 ticket or not, I think it is a great idea for raffles like these. I am 198% sure that I won't win but there is a chance in there somewhere :).

Thanks for all your hard work Jennifer. You have really done a lot for the future of the club and made it so much easier for others to maintain the financial stability of C-SEA. The non-profit filing, club bank account, club debit cards, Paypal account and paying off previous debts were all important undertakings.

All the planning with the venue, food and other logistics of the swap are appreciated. We are lucky to have a go-getter in the treasury position this year and hope you do feel appreciated by all because you are.

This additional raffle was supposed to just be an interesting, fun thing to help mix things up and test out a new possibility for the club to gain some revenue and one lucky person (hopefully me  ) will walk away with a NICE item.

One question... will I need to cover out of state shipping for you guys to send my new controller to PA?

:p
