Maricultured corals

How's everybody doing these days with maricultured corals? Are they still a toss up? Holding colors ect? Thanks

Very easy to keep and they need very intense light to hold colors found out the hard way. I have three of them and will not buy again.... Frags and Australian sps do well for me.

Agree on the high light. I have a couple that is doing well but I have to put them near top of the tank to keep the color.

I have the opposite problem mine had great color put it up high and it started bleaching lowered it and now it's doing better

Tempting as they are often cheaper and bigger but VERY hit and miss and much more likely to cause heartbreak IME/IMO. Not a light problem in my case (2000W over a 500g). I now only buy aquacultured.

I'm mostly wild / mari cultured. Some hold the colour from the get go, others loose them but will get them back over time (6 months +) Lots of light and keep that flow up assume they always have pests.

Maricultured is totally awesome except for pest control

My tank is almost 100% maricultured corals. cheaper, bigger so better in that with the money u pay for a frag, u get a small colony :lol2: maricultured r less rare tho

it color def remains and grows really fast. they actually usually came browned up and then color up in the tank

the royal pain is pest control. u always get cool hitchhikers like sps crab, shrimp but there r always bad ones

but its also very true that maricultured ones seem more resistant to red bugs

ill go with maricultured from now on

If everyone stayed away from wild colonies there would be no aquacultured frags. Buying wild and maricultured colonies (which are basically wild) was the appeal of SPS keeping that had me hooked. There's noting like buying a mystery colony with mediocre color and have it turn into something beautiful.

Keep in mind placement high or low will have a lot to due with nutrient level. The more po4 the more of a population of zooxzanthalle a coral will have. More zoox=darker color=tolerate more. Less zoox=lighter color=tolerate less light.

very true an often overlooked, but not by me:) i love a mystery:)

just messing around, maricultured corals are great. I hope everyone will try a few.

The wild colonies coming in from aussie are generally some of the best corals to be had.

i agree and like to show a bit. i dont usually do that because of my bad photo skills.

i particularly enjoy the process of lookin for a similarity to those aquacultured rarities

This is a watermelon monti or what?

this one is a royal pain for it was very pink when i got it. then i placed it so high that it bleached. moved down for a while and the pink is coming back very slowly

mariculture for me is at least very financially affordable and i dont see why the color can't stay. besides, while u save, u also help protect corals in indonesia :)
