marine pests problems

Hello I was wondering if any one can help me. I have owned a marine tank for 3 years now and have a lot of live rock in my tank. I had a yellow tang that every time the lights went off in the tank reappeared in the morning with large chunks of his tail missing until eventually he only had a third of his tail left and i noticed him getting thinner and then he died. This happened in a period of 4-6 months but none of my other fish in my tank have had the same problem. Last week i bought a coral beauty. I have only had it in the tank 6 days and this too has now got three pieces missing from its tail this has happened in a day. Does anyone have any ideas what could be doing this to my fish and how I could stop it please.

Thanks for your reply. We have one blue actinic moonlight which goes off at 11.00pm and we have a pyjama wrasse 1.5 inch, a white and orange nemo 1.5 inch, a black and white nemo 1.5 inch, a 2 inch coral beauty, a 1 inch croma and an arrow head crab and 2 cleaner shrimps. None of the fish ever bicker when the lights are on they all get on really well and the only fish that seem to get picked on are the fish with frilly tails

Well...that certainly makes sense. A lot of fish can be more aggressive towards fish with larger or more flowing tails, one of the reasons that male Betta's are so aggressive towards other fish with "fancy" tails, for example.

Could be your clowns getting feisty and territorial, hopefully someone with some experience will chime in, as none of your fish are listed as being problematic with other species in any of my books.

when the fish first started to have his tail nipped we didnt have any clown fish in the tank and if the fish dont fight in the day light they are very unlikely to fight by night i think that there is somehting living in the rocks that comes out at night and preys on certain fish although i cant find any information to sustain my predictions other than possibly a bristle worm which i have seen in the past but they are not usually that aggressive they tend to smother fish rather than biting fish it is a mystery that is really getting on my nerves as my best fish in the tank is now starting to look really tatty if i dont find a solution he will inevitably die just like my yellow tang

I believe your culprit is your arrow crab. They will eat fish. He cant do much damage because of how tiny his claws are, but he will try to eat anything he can.

"We have one blue actinic moonlight which goes off at 11.00pm"

That's not a moonlight, that's part of your daylight setup.
A moonlight is a little tiny light that stays on your tank overnight.

i had a bad little crab that took out a strawberry dottyback, that was only a little bigger than the size of a quarter. do you know if there are any crabs that hide in your rock? or any mantis shrimp? it is a good thing to get some small l.e.d.'s for nighttime watching. many animals that you would never know were even in your tanlk come out at night and are hidden by moring. let us know if you find anything.
