Marine pure question

I got a block of marine pure for a present this morning... I was just wondering if this needs to "cure" before it goes in the sump or can I just rinse it real good with RO water and put it in??

You can just rinse it and put it in!

How do y'all recommend orienting them in the sump? Lay them flat or prop them up on the narrow side? Seems like you would lose some useable surface area laying them flat?

Thank you... I was going to stand it up, maybe on a few short pieces of PVC tubing.
