Marineland 250 DD Disaster

Marineland pays for your tank, LFS pays for the rest. There's no reason to bring your insurance into the situation when the LFS installed it. That's why your LFS has insurance.

My thoughts exactly. And if the LFS follows through with that and remedies the situation I will be a loyal customer for life.

thats a real bummer Brandon. hang in there. fwiw i always use styro foam. i do tank installs and that is a must for me, with ply wood.

I would think bottom support could only help too. But like I said I have no idea how the engineering works. I can tell the LFS about running a business but bldg a tank stand that will not result in tank failure... No idea.

Man, You Have Every bit of Sympathy I can Give You Brandon.I always hate to hear about tanks leaking, but I especially didn't like hearing about the Mess you are in with yours, so to speak, I really hope this works out for you Buddy! The Stand Voiding the Warranty is Pretty Serendipitous...

Are you useing foam under glass tanks just asking

Hopefully with good insurance if it is not in his home. There is no one approach, some tanks are designed for support on the edges only. Follow manufactures advice-Unless you designed the tank, don`t assume you know better.

Sorry to see your loss and the destruction caused to your home. In the picture of the stand, aside from the bottom support being one inch away from bottom of the tank, it also seems that they put 2 bottom supports toward the center of the tank. Having engineering and construction experience, it appears that even if those support were up against the bottom of the tank, they still failed to support the outter parts of the tank. There should have been one more piece of wood support on either side of the existing 2 center supports and the edges of the tank, to ensure even weight distribution.

This appears to be poor planning and construction on the LFS side. Again sorry for your situation!

There was no foam under the tank. From what I understand these tanks are designed to be perimeter supported. But that's what I was told. The marineland site is difficult to navigate to find out stuff like that. I sent an email request in asking that the rep for my area contact me. That has yet to happen. Either way, I think the moral to this story is that there are major risks involved in setting up a tank this large. The tank company is too big to deal with and generally the LFS is too small to handle this type of worst case scenario. I plan on a new tank but will not take anythig lightly or for granted.

Like everyone else I believe the LFS should replace everything. I build my own stands and I believe in a top and bottom and back made out of 3/4" plywood along with a center brace in the front seperating the doors. None of what I see this stand has and why ML or others will warrant there tanks without using there stands. On my 300DD I used oak hardwood on the front and sides but doubled the boards to create 1 1/2" thickness.

Don't think I said anything about designing the tank or said anything about knowing better so you should read the post and and understand tht question that is being asked and you can see in the pictures that there is no foam under the tank it also seems like most people say that the stand is the issue at hand and yes I have a 300dd

Tanks like that where the bottom pane is elevated DO NOT have to be put on plywood and should not be placed on styrofoam. Styrofoam is a bandaid for sloppy craftsmanship or untrue/out of level/not plumb lumber. Plywood cannot hurt, but you only need lumber where the plastic trim touches.

An acrylic or custom glass tank where the bottom is a pane of glass should be on solid plywood and styrofoam.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune. If you have a moment look under the stand at the black bottom edge of the tank, go around the perimeter and see if the tank is touching the whole way around or if there are gaps from the wood being uneven.

When i built the stand for my 120 I had issues with the wood having "waves" in it. Had to put "flatter" wood in and work with it from there.

That's very unfortunate, it's depressing to see how those clowns died together.
Brought a tear to my eye, reminding me of how Titanic ended.

Thanks again everyone. I really do appreciate the support. Quick update.. The LFS had their insurance company contact me and they are sending an adjuster out next week. I was fully prepared for things to get ugly and had already contacted my attorney but my LFS seems to be handling things and accepting responsibility exactly the way I hoped they would without any threat of legal action. I know they never meant for this to happen but it is what they are doing afterward that shows what they are really all about. I hope this continues and that we can all put this all behind us. Thank you again.
