That is exactly what I am going to do. One would think approximately 5-6 ttimes display tank volume through the sump is more than addequate. Your important flow comes from powerheads/wavemakers/sea swirls etc.

What if you dont want to see plumbing coming over the top of the tank? And - isn't the amount of flow thru the sump more about the total intent for the tank?
Perhaps the OP might want to think about not having to see powerheads in the tank?
And - Quincy...external overflows ARE an option - with Marineland/Perfecto. They did mine recently. Want some pics?
Serpentman - you have a point about the overflows and braces. I had them Euro-brace mine, so there is no cross brace as in the standard plastic one.
The external overflow I did is a Coast to Coast/ Beananimal style with 2 main siphons.

My 300 DD is being drilled and set up now. Just like most of you, I'm going to use both 1" B/H in the overflows as drains. I'm also having a third hole drilled into both overflows for the returns. My tank will essentially be flush to the wall and so I need to bring all the plumbing up through the bottom.

5 k price tag?? u can order a 300 dd online for about 3300 with 9 bucks shipping and yes they will ship for 9 bucks cuz i called them and asked and the 3300 included the stand and canopy i just dont like the stand at 30" tall but any bigger wont fit thru most door unless u have double front door

What about using a sliding door to get the tank inside. I know a lot of people have them so that might be an option.

This is probably the cheapest aquarium supply store for tanks that I've ever come across. It's the list from "that fish place" in Lancaster, PA. Luckily it's only a few hours from me, so I may consider buying my next tank from them.

yup tats possible but u would need to carry it all the way to the backyard thru the small isle and bak up to where u wanan place tank tats y they made the tank 27" tall

I know this is kind of old, but just bought one a couple of weeks ago for $1,180 plus tax, so $1,277 total. Standard 300dd w/ regular glass.

just orderd a 300 dd from the lfs with 9 holes total driled for $2000.00 i built my stand yesterday for around $100.00 (just the stand not faced yet). you can also build the stand in the room that you want the tank in you you don not have to worrie about the door issues have not started my buld thread yet but think about doing it tonight.my lfs said his guy that builds his stands does two pice stand all the time not sure how he does it but i did not want to trust it he also wanted $1000.00 for the stand and hood.
