Marineland 'Stealth' heater recall

FYI I saw this on another forum:

February 11, 2011

Dear Valued PetSmart Pet Parent,

Marineland has issued a voluntary withdrawal of the Stealth PRO Submersible Heater (100, 200 and 250 watt). The product is being withdrawn due to a quality issue.

If you have this product, please stop using it immediately and take the following steps:

1. Unplug the heater from the wall to stop the flow of electricity
2. Let the heater cool for 15 minutes
3. Remove the heater from the tank

Please bring the product to your closest PetSmart for a full refund or exchange. Replace the product with a comparable heater as soon as possible to maintain the temperature of your aquarium. A PetSmart store associate can help you select the right heater for your aquatic environment.

If you have questions about this withdrawal, please call Marineland Customer Service at 800-526-0650 or 800-432-6986.

At PetSmart, we are concerned pet parents, too. We will continue to do everything we can to help you and your pet during this time.

Sincerely,

Debbie Gonzalez
Vice President, Brand and Customer Marketing

Crap! I just went through all my old stuff that doesn't work anymore and trashed it. Might have to go dumpster dive in my trashcan tonight. Talk about wrong timing!

I've got a few of these laying around. Are they giving cash or store credit? What does petsmart sell that would be a more reliable replacement? Receipt required?

Friend of mine had one blow in his tank and killed everything. Marineland is covering the livestock.

I just received an "Urgent Safety Alert" letter from the United Pet Group (UPG) alerting its customers about the voluntary recall of the Marineland Stealth Heater Models (25W thru 250W) and Marineland Stealth Pro Heater Models (25W thru 300W). The letter instructs you to call UPG at (800) 338-4896 M-F 7:30am - 5:30pm ET.

I called today and they are closed for the holiday. I have seven of these heaters, and I'll call next week.

Any one tried to take their heaters to petsmart succesfully? Just dont want to drive there and be denied.

My friend returned one to petco yesterday..no receipt no prob..choice of replacement heater or store credit.

So the "chains" are involved it doesn't have to go back to petsmart specifically?

Exactly right...whomever sells that heater. It does not have to be the same store you originally bought it from. If they sell/sold it..you're good to go.

Horray, I have 3 of them from my first tanks. I will be going to petsmart on Monday to return them. What to do with the credit? I guess buy some salt.

It's nice to see the company stepping forward. I think they should have done it soon as those heaters have had the reputation to pop for some time now. I personally know of a handful of stories about these failing and exploding, here locally. Imagine how many cases there are around the country and the world. One that I know of lead to an entire sump blowing out, melting and burning. I saw pictures and looked like a bomb blew up in the room.

For some reason we never carried them so I never really used any. In terms of returns I am pretty sure any shop that sold these should take them back.

just called petco(syr), said "you can absolutely bring them in" :)
what brand are you guys/gals exchanging them for?

I haven't returned any of my 7 yet, but is everyone getting store credit? I've read if you're persistent, you can get cash.

I had one blow out and shatter the tank . Glass and water everywhere. Fortunately, it was a 10 gallon quarantine tank in the basement with no occupants.

I'm probably going to go with something comparable. Any one know of any stores that may take them who have titanium units? Paying the difference would be well worth it.
