Mark's 180 Starfire upgrade

Friends have new bulb combo, which looks so much nicer. Fragaclause's frags are starting to color up nicely!

I guess we'll start seeing more pictures since fragaclause is tired of shooting pictures of reef serenity :blown:

You know, I've tried snapping a bunch of pics, but haven't posted any of them. Couple a lame snapper (won't even call myself a photographer  ) and a cheapo fuji camera, and pictures are fail :sad1:I'll keep waiting for your art :)

Chemistry question - My Ca and Mg are stable since re-loading my tank with SPS (450 and 1550). But I use more Alk (normally 8ish). Will drop to 7 now. I add 80mL daily of 2-part. So when it drops to 7, I'll add another 80mL of Alk (raises alk to 8) and resume my daily 80mL additions of 2 part, which keeps Alk stable at 8.

Is it normal for coral to use more alk than Ca? Or is my gfo sucking up the alk?

The MG is out of balance Terry and since they all work together, it could also be leading to some of your miscoloration. The PO4 absorber will potentially lower your alk but as you add more corals, your tanks alk consumption will also rise. Is that what you are asking? Why the drop in your alk?

Yes, I'm asking why my alk is dropping, but nothing else. So my Mg is too high? How do I lower it? I don't dose Mg. Is it coming from my salt and/or 2-part?

What does the tunze test out at? Test your new salt water mix for mg and go from there. I'd say its from your two part mix. It seems that the tank is consuming the alk at a quicker rate than anything else. My alk does the same from time to time.

I'd also ask Brian his view as he is very good with chemistry as well ;)

IIRC, the tunze salt is in the 1300's, so must be the 2-part. Ugggh, how do I lower Mg w/o decreasing the amount of 2-part I add? Who's Brian?

Terry, I'm assuming that you just changed your GFO. if so that is why you see a dip in alk. GFO will precipitate Calcium Carbonate.

Yup, just changed the GFO! Should I be worried about the high Mg level?

Thanks guys!

Nope :fun4:

I disagree :fun2: If your tank has a lot of snails, then you'll need to watch your tank. Snails do not tolerate the high levels of mg very well. Once they start to die off, the levels of nutrients can and will rise, but what do I know?

I came to you first, cuz you know everything in my eyes
