Mark's 40 Breeder build

Got some drilling work done on the tank today. Ran out of time so only got through part of the first hole - didn't want to rush things and have something bad happen. Can finish in the morning.

Cody and sixpack, thanks for your input on the lighting. I will be just trying out the 175 for now and if needs be increase to a second light. Don't forget this will be softies and LPS, no SPS's.

Mark

Made some progress on finishing the stand framing today - now I can place both tanks and see how everything looks. All that's left is skinning and staining.

I also have the chance to start work on the plumbing and sump. I originally wanted to put the fuge in the middle of the sump but have seen some sumps with the fuge on the end so haven't decided yet.

And I finished drilling the hole for the overflow. :D

Very nice, you're off to a great start. I remember when I was first starting and upgraded from a 20L to a 40B. The 40 seemed so big. I have a sickness haha. Seriously though, it's looking very good.

Thanks Swope and Cosmo, just having the stand put together and holding both tanks really puts things into perspective.

Of course having certain guys already getting their rock just makes one more anxious to hurry up.

Don't worry, a few months is not a long time [emoji6]

Finally an update after nearly 2 weeks off! :spin1:

My sons back in school so now I have really been able to get back to the build. I have most of my stands skin done, still need to work on the doors and do the trim, then I can stain it. Ultimately I did a skin of 1/4" ply then used 1/2" 1X 4 poplar boards to finish it.

I discovered I had a brain fart when working up my plumbing - I usually drill my overflow so the drain pipes are on the left side. Must have been really tired when do my measurement and drilling b/c I discovered I put it on the right side so that threw me off a bit. :mixed:

Will be picking up my glass for my sump partitions tomorrow and I settled on having the fuge on the end rather than putting it in the middle of the sump. I like the idea of having it isolated from the rest of the sump/tank.

Getting closer! :bounce3:

Thanks Swope!

My day off from work to go to Tampa has been approved and so I'll be picking up my rock and doing some diving on September 30. Now I really have to get things set up as I have a deadline to meet! :lmao:

Sweet!!! Looking forward to seeing the amazing rock!

Speaking of amazing rock, how is your tank and the cycle doing? And what about that awesome urchin hitchhiker? That was a pretty cool addition.

I've been gone for a week, had a friend do a couple water changes just to be safe. I will be home late tonight and post my new numbers.

I've been gone for a week

My gosh I'd be stressing out gone that long! Glad you have someone to take care of things while your away.

BTW, has the smoke started to clear up for you guys out there?

Smoke is clear for the moment. Yeah, no one has checked on it since Wednesday night though... Im anxious to get home and check things!

Did a functionality test over the weekend. Set everything up in the garage (just in case something breaks - the flood would go down the driveway) and filled the tank and sump up and watched as I got water flowing through the overflow with minimal noise. Oh yeah!

And the countdown to get my 2.1 rock has begun: 22 days :bounce3:

Not wanting to stifle your excitement, what happens if your overflow drain gets plugged by a snail? I am ever the guy who fears a flood...

No problems Swope,

The kit has an acrylic cover that fits over the overflow so no snails getting in there. Plus the drain is 1 1/2 inches wide which is huge and my snails will be limited to nerites, nassarius, ceriths, and a fighting conch or two. But thanks for the reminder as I probably will start thinking of a way to secure that overflow cover JIC.

I think vbnh was repeating me from earlier... :strange:
