Maroon clown question

So I just got an adult three inch maroon clownfish (Premnas biaculeatus), I've never really read anything about any other clowns outside of percula and ocelaris. Is there a difference species wise between the gold stripe, white stripe, and yellow stripe clowns? And could I add a young gold stripe male to the tank so the large female could have a mate? Or would she beat him to death before they paired?

Maroons can be very aggressive and difficult to pair up. Be prepared to intervene if the little guy gets attacked badly. No difference in behavior between gold and white stripes IME.

Ok thanks for the info. She is super mean, she's been in for one day and has already bitten me. She's guarding her half of the tank very aggressively and hosting to three seperate nems on one rock. Thankfully my other inhabitants are really peaceful.

3 inch is still far from the 5 to 6 inches they can reach under ideal conditions. I've actually seen 3 inch males (they have brighter red coloring) with 5 inch females

As for the PNG narrowband and Indian Ocean goldstripe forms - they may well be different species so I personally would only pair fish from the same region.

Matt Peterson states that the goldstripes are less aggressive than the white narrowbands.

When I made a pair of gold band maroons I had the bigger fish first , I should've probably have done that backwards... But I put a second one half the size of the first one and she almost killed him in the first 2 hours then he hid for the night, and the next 24 hours he shook and did the submission dance like I had never seen another clown shake it that much. Then she decided to like him and they lived 7 years together... She went on to get A almost 7" and she was the meanest fish I ever owned. She would chase fish out of the aquarium when the couple had eggs.
But she was almost 4" when I got her.
So if you get a mini mini one with lots of hiding places for the first night it should work...

Lol I bet he did.

Thats so cool, do you have a picture when they were togethor and full sized?

Do you think a yellow stripe would pair with the white stripe?

I believe THRoewer on the different origins Im just still not clear on actual species standing.

And thanks for sharing ginpang, just picturing a seven inch clown fish is awesome.

Why would you want to put a yellow stripe with a white stripe? Any plans on breeding and raising the hatch?

I don't see why you couldn't put them together. But the same applies with any clown pair since you have a 3" get the other one at around an inch but not much more to make sure you get a male.

Yeah I was thinking right at an inch also. I just want to make sure they will pair if I can, before I try to put them through it.

Maroons are very difficult to pair ime. Just because you get a smaller one doesnt mean they will pair up. It took me 3 different maroons one time before i finally found one that the female liked.

Same experience as Shifty. I have a four yr old Maroone (5") that is the meanest fish in the tank. Was the mail of a pair. When the female died this one started growing and got much meaner. He is being sold off as I start my new 150g tank. Too hard to pair up unless very young.

.

Since they are same species I guess they would pair up . Like I think shifty had mentioned apparently standard maroons are more aggressive ... So if your mini mini one you try is a standard and your bigger one a gold band it could possibly work..
Though if I was to introduce a pair again I would probably ease them into it by placing a "splitter" for a few days or even weeks . Now that I'm wiser.!

For the picture I will look into it , I probably have that in my photography school archives ...Mind you ,it was back when pictures were film negatives !!!! [emoji13]

Awesome thank you, I don't think I've ever seen a picture of a full adult up close.

That's why I was thinking maybe an acclimation box might be a good route.

I really hope this doesn't happen, a gold maroon isn't the most common fish in my area and my options are probably limited to two.

I never had any problems pairing them. Though I would always buy the individuals for a pair from the same shipment or at least make sure they come from the same region.
