Thanks Capn.

am just hoping things will continue to improve and hopefully start to grow.
as for the corals, I hav two LFS here where one gets stocks every few weeks but the problem is that all of it is sold within few days so I have to buy corals that have not settled in therefore have lower survival rate.they only get softies and few LPS but at one time they got some SPS. The other one has only fresh water items but I can always chose the stuff I want from their list and they will get it for me with the next shipment. I have to receive it in the bag and pay for it in whatever condition it comes in. I onlly use this for soft corals and so far it was not bad.
Lately I have been getting lots of soft corals and/fish from Dubai where I buy it and head to the airport where a Vet examines it and gives me a health certificat and I pack it in foam coolers in a bag that I check. when on travel I mainly buy whatever good brand food aditives test kits pumps that I find and bring it with me.I also flew with some corals from Holland few years ago only with a copy of the CITES license ofthe LFS and had no problems except for most of them being crushed in shipping.Eventually whatever I need can be supplied to in the LFS but prices are outrageous (150 USD for a Phosphate reactor)...
Dont really understand this no LR rule what if you buy a small mushroom that comes on a piece of LR???

Thanks counting on it.

yes, if you buy the mushrooms attached to the rock they will confiscate the --Canadian customs laws are the most brillant in the world:D

Ok so Ill take out only frags if Im ever in canada.
As for the tank well I should be on the plane in 4 hours to get back home only for a few hours then back to Turkey. Just spoke with my wife on the phone and sheàs telling me taht eveything looks like it was when I left but with few items moved a bit somehow (must be my Tiger cowrie shell which is very big and move lots of stuff everynight. guess Ill just put it in the sump when I travel from now on.

Heres my tigger cowrie shell.
Does anyone else keep such big ones? It sometimes is teh show stopper in the tank when it starts moving especially with its skin wrappig aroud it... also it does a great job on coraline or hard alga on the glass and rocks.

I love Tiger Cowries, but after a while you may discover they will eat other stuff you care about. Mine mowed down a bunch of zoanthids. I gave it to a club member that was tired of his zoas and wanted them out of his tank, and the cowrie cleaned them out nicely.

You can feed it entire leaves of lettuce if you feel it lacks sufficient food.

Thats new to me never noticed it eating any of my zoos mazbe should keep an eye on it though. how do you do to feed it lettuce do you just pick it up and put it on the lettuce?

Yep, that is exactly what I did. In 30 minutes or so, you'll have no lettuce at all. :)

Make sure you rinse it well to get rid of any pest or insecticides.

Ok a small update.
Arrived back home yesterday evening and to my surprise the tank was looking much better than when I left. The front glass was a more filled with alga than what usually builds within 6 days which was disturbing but most corals looked very nice. the Carpet anemone was the one that impressed me most on the first look as it had expanded to the largest size ive seen it take since 5 years and it looked the brightest green it has ever been. Wonder if I should stop feeding it or maybe decrease feedings to 1 per week or even less.
The newer RBTA which had bleached is still doing fine not moving and I believe is starting to recover some colours.
My old BTA which had been fading in colour and recently was sucked by a PH is still the same I can still see the scar on the foot but it seems its healing. it is attached tothe rock still but not opening up and all tentacles are deflated. I'm starting to think it will not make it which is very sad as this was my first coral I ever had (8 years old now)
The tiger cowrie had dropped one of my lobophylias from the rocks it was on but it always lands on the sand faceup which is fine. I also had few coral displaced a bit which was a veryquick fix.
So spot fed the corals and the anemones which my wife does not do. did not have time to test aprameters as I had to unpack and pack again for todays early morning flight to turkey.
so I just dosed CA balance, and today morning some purple up before I left.
Ten I checked my sump as I was worried about the brownish alga build up on the glass as well as on the sand bed. I had this alga for couple of weeks (brownish coloration of hte sand bed which disapaers by gently moving the top layer) and it had disappeared for hte last week before I left. but now here it is again.
Everything is the sump was fine my skimmer had been cleaned by my wife (still nagging about the smell) by midweek so I just gave them a clean afer target feeding the corals. kept them off for 2 hours after feeding the corals and made sure I turned them on (this is a contant panic attack when I convince myself that I did not start the skimmers...)
My mushrooms look a bit darker except for the red actinodiscus which are on the sand and in shade and are bleaching. is it possible they need more light and I'm trying to decrease light hitting them from the start thinking it's light shock?
One last surprise:
My wife organized the tank drawers :D
DSC_9756.jpg

DSC_9758.jpg

With one of those"Lets see how long it takes you to mess them up again:p

but I kinda like to think that she organized everything after she took all those to read them and learn beter on how to does things for the tank:D and that she's finally more and more interested in keeping a reeftank which could mean upgrade possibility:D

One thing I jsut remembered is that my Phosphate reactor was a bit clogged and water was barely moving through it so I unplugged the pump and ran it the opposite way which pushes the particles the opposite way unclogging them as well as taking out the fine particles that were blocking the screen. few mintes later i refixed the pump on the other end and it was workign much better. hope this deals with the increasing brownish alga.

So for now I'm in Turkey waiting to be back on Friday morning. and this time I sohuld be home again for 1-2 weeks which should give me time for few coming projects for the tank:

-Finalizing the new Qtank filter (DIY) as i have the bioballs for it in the sump of hte 150 to seed them with Bacteria.
-add sand in the refugium for an additional DSB.
- adding a screen to the refugium return section partition to make sure no macroalga is going to move along which is still not happening.
-Elevating the partition between the refugium and return section to allow for additional height of the refugium for a higher DSB in it as well as having water drip from the refugium to the middle partition instead of having it be higher than the partition.
-A big water change.
-Deciding on a Ca ractor or Kalwakser. Guess Kalk will be easier for my wife to manipulate while away than a Ca reactor going wrong and having to wait for me to come back for 4-5 days.
Guess with my current corals and the increased evaporation I have Kalk will be more than enough.
do you think I'll need to add MG or will I just rely on water changes for that?
-Adding a second T5 this one will be actinic for a more pleasant and a bit stronger blue light before lights off. this should improve my success rate with actinic shots as well as provide some more bluish look while halides are on, if not then at least provide a much nicer actinic period before lights off which I tend to really like. This will complete my lighting plan.
-It's also time for a few additions (corals and fish which I will have hte time to monitor having 2 weeks at home and the LFS has an order coming soon.
More updates when I get back by Friday, In the time being here are some pics of my current fish:

My cardinals 2 remaining from 4 added around 2 months ago. wonder if they have some fry in the tank as I saw some very small fry swimming in holes in the rocks and couldn't tell what they were or take a pic of them.

Anthia only have one but plan to add 3 more.

Finally the yellow cories wrass that seems to be doing fine finally in my tank as they usually disappeared within few days in my old tank:

OK an ID question before I go back tomorrow and start again with more questions and updates.
I bought this rock which was coverd by GSP 4-5 years ago. the GSP survived in the tank but did not thrive (expand) and one day for no reason they closed for a few weeks and melted.
A flat surface appeared beneath them on the rock with minor pinkish colour which darkened up after the GSP died. it very rarely showed some polyps extension and overgrew the rock it was on. When I moved it the the 150 I put it by mistake directly below a 150 MH and traveled for a week so it was light shocked and lost it's coloration. after bringing it lower into the shade it took 2 weeks to start showing hte holes of of thepolyps and after that it kinda shed its outer layer which it did a few times when healthy. parts of it are colouring up and I guess it might be recovering. I tried to get an ID on it many times with no lucK so anyone any ID:

here's when I found it light shocked (will try to find pics of when it was healthy)

and some more improvment
DSC_0715.jpg

I don't see anything alive on that item. It looks like dead coral skeleton that is getting algae growth on it. I'm sure someone will quickly recognize it, but I don't know what it is/was. Seems like it might be porites, but I've never looked at a bare base skeleton of one.

Sorry to be so negative. If it turns around, I'll be happily surprised.

Hi Marc,
I'm sure that those pink areas on the edges appeared recently. Anyway just fond few pictures of when it was alive.
It's colours always varied between the followings and it grew by spreading those white areas that would colourup:

Now that coral I recognize. That is Blue Ridge coral. When you take a piece and break it in half, you'll see it is blue inside. It is sort of in the leather family, because it does extend polyps and can shed. Sometimes it is very shiny.

I have two pieces of blue ridge in my tank. It isn't a fast grower, but it's kind of interesting.

guess you got it right once again still I remember braking few pieces and getting white on the inside. I'm just hoping that the pink edges will regrow. can't wait to be home tomorrow as I haven't checked on it since 2 weeks.

Just arrived home, after 2 weeks of business trips. I did come back for few hours last sturday and the glass was filled with greensih and brownish alga showing clearly the signs of snails and my cowrie munching on it all over. So after an additional week I could barely see through the glass. gave it a good magnet clean (still have to get a more powerfull magnet) followed by thourough cleaning by a special tank cleaning sponge which worked very good on some very small alga dots that I get which are very tough to remove.
The good news is that everything is OK I would say with follwoing exceptions:
Few corals have been knocked off again by the Tiger Cowrie which now will be removed eachi time I travel to the refugium. Will it eat my caulerpa?
My Torch have lost another head (4 left now one of which is not doing fine) and seems to be loosing colours. I had increase my lighting by an additional hour last saturday but am not sure this could have caused such an effect. moved it to an area with a bit less ligthting hoping it will recover. Any suggestions? will post pics tomorrow.
also my actinodiscus mushrooms are still fading in colours since moved to this tank. Hairy mushrooms and Yumas doing much better.
BTAs still doig the same one still recovering from the injured foot and today looked very closed and shriveled, the other might be slowly improving.
Sand is covered by this brownish alga (Cyano?) will post pics tomorrow.
One last very ugly happeningis that I found 3 Aptasias on 3 different rocks 2 of them with corals that I coud take out and one on a weight holding rock.
Seems I had some from the start which my CBB was keeping in check till it passed away. Not having any kalk past or Joes juice... I just injected them with boiling water and some vinegar till I saw the tissue melt. the rocks I could take out were treated otside the tank but one was injected inside the tank. I've had good success with boiling water and vinegar in the past som hopefully this is the last of them. don't know if I should venture with a CBB especially that I have plans for some Clams...
Went to LFS to get some fish/corals but it was closed. Called the owner and he told me they got some fish (Red sea) and that he didn't know if they still had any so it'll be fore tomorrow or maybe monday which gives me time to glue the filter for the new Q tank. Mor updates and pics tomorrow. but if anyone has any suggestions on the Torch I would appreciate it.

The head that died - does it have a slimy film over it? You could be dealing with Brown Jelly Disease. If you have that, you want to siphon it out so it won't land on any other corals.

The brown algae on the glass indicates a nutrient load in the tank.

The fading corals indicates lack of sufficient lighting, usually. Or too much. Sorry, that works both ways, as coral can bleach if they get too much light. Plus it could also be heat-related if the tank gets too hot each day.

No slimy coat was ever seen. Head startes to open smaller and smaller then I can see the tetacles clsoed in the head for few days before they start to disappear. does that indicate anything?
As for the Nutrient load I'm wondering where it comes from as the tank was only fed 5 times in the last 2 weeks by my wife and I prepared teh portions for her before traveling. Anyway will cut off trace elements and decrease feedings with a big water change or 2 next week hoping it'll resolve it.
Do you suggest I return the torch to where it was and work on the tank temp. it's stable on 82-83 and only got 4-5 weeks for cooler/colder weather. Do you think I should invest in a chiller just for 4-5 weeks or is it really acceptable to keep the temp taht high. So far I had received replies that mostly told me it was Ok for the tank to even go higher than this but at this stage I'm really wondering.
do you suggest I return the torch to where it was for the last 4-5 moths as I guess if lighting was too strong for it it would have bleached long ago?
do you know if actinodiscous mushrooms require more light than yumas and hairy mushrooms as they are all on the same level with only the acitnodiscus bleaching. also they are at the lowest level in the tank.
Thanks

No, I wouldn't get a chiller. What temperature does the tank reach every night? Is it a big swing down from the 83/84F you see each day? Or does it only drop down to 83F?

Something is really bothering the Torch for it to close up like that, but I've had perfectly healthy heads of frogspawn suddenly shut down and die for no reason at all.

Remind me what skimmer you have again. Perhaps it just needs a little more daily attention to cut down on the nutrients that cause that brown on the glass. Does your wife not use the cleaning magnet while you are away?

If mushrooms look pale or see-through, they either aren't getting enough nutrients or light. Corals that turn white are getting too much light usually, and pale means not enough.

I wish I could be more help - it just seems like I'm not getting the full picture for some reason to help you nail down some of the issues you've raised.
