Maroun 150g Build Thread

Thanks,
That shouldn't be difficult as my frag tank is already full.
However it's very difficult to get corals inside UAE especially hard corals as you should have a CITES license...

Just it put in your check in baggage and cover the polythene coral bag in a black garbage bag.No worries.I bought a few SPS last time from BKK this way.
I am flyiing to JKT so will try again to bring some more.

Great will try that on my next visit. would be great to exchange some frags...
Once I have my flight schedule will inform you in advance so you can meet me to avoid delay time for the corals... the good news is that I might flying to Dubai before the expected trip in mid Jan as I might travel there within the next 2 weekd for a 1 hour meeting so It'll be a 1 day trip. Will update you once I have a confirmation.

that is something I will look forward too;)

Sorry for the delay.

Here are some pics of my tank before reararnging it. it "suffered" many addition lately and all were just dumped on the sand as I was on continuous travel and had no time to light acclimate and arrange them on the rocks. also my frag tank is full and a mess so they couldn't go there.

not happy with the scape of all the tank but at least the left side and middle allows me to place enough corals. I will also be moving the tank in 6-7 months so I chose to just arrange the RT side instead of breaking up the whole tank and rescaping. Ok scaping is my nightmare in reefing...
so here's the last arrangement I made. it's supported on Eggcrate as I didn't have rocks to add and I'm saving any rocks addition till them move this way the new LR will reseed the existing one in case some of it dies off in the transfer....The eggcrate still shows in some areas but it'll be covered better when the corals on it that are light acclimating move to their final placement...

I kinda like the slope effect it gives eventhough the Right side looks a bit different than the left and middle.
Also adding some eggcrate to the rockstructure makes it easier to have a stair like scape with a some straight areas to place corals. I'm considering adding eggcrate or supporting the LR with some PVC structure int he new tank. not to mention the amount of detritus trapped between the rocks I removed which I'm sure did also contribute to my nitrate problem. I can clearly see water flow even under the rocks suported on eggcrate...

And some pics of the corals added in the last 1-2 months.

From Spain:
A Suharsonoi? pictures with flash so a bit ligher in reality

Montipora Digitata : had blueish tips at LFS if I remember correctly
DSC_6075.jpg

got to of those bluish accropora millepora, browned out a bit after shipping but they seem to be comign back

DSC_6076.jpg

Green millepora still waiting for longer PE. maybe needs a bitmore light and flow

DSC_6089.jpg

Montipora digitata: nice light yellow green.

DSC_6110.jpg

Green accro with Blue tips: was a brighter Turquoise green and blue was more pronounced on tips
DSC_6332.jpg

And another digitata that suffered through shipping and is making a come back.

DSC_6335.jpg

And a 60% dead coral from shipping. was a nice light purple. I can still se tissue on the skeleton but no polyps and the tissue looks rather brownish. hoping this will make a comeback.
DSC_6341.jpg

nearly dead coral from shipping was a nice velvet, brown color with bright blue tips on it
not sure if it can still recover
DSC_6342.jpg

both last 2 corals have made it through the last 2 weeks with no additional RTN or STN so I'm hoping they'll start imporoving soon. So far they are under medium low light and flow not sure if I shoudl move them to more light and more flow or if that will have a negative effect?

Corals from Switzerland (6 frags and 2 colonies all made it fine through shipment although I shipped the frags in small urine sample containers)

Green Candy Cane

Orange digitata. colored up nice after 2 weeks from shipping hoping it'll grow fast as I love bright digitata
DSC_6349.jpg

And some frags I got from local reefers as they received a coral shipment here while I was on travel and I couldn't get any large colonies...

the frags on the large cement plugs.

(notice growth tips on my red planet)

And another frag I received from the same colony of birdnest a previous one didn't make it in my tank 2-3 months ago

and a frag of a Blue accro I got for a friend from Holland 3-4 months ago. The one in the middle of the pics

Need some help with following corals not doing so well while others are doing great:

Hydnopora Very slow STN is in medium light medium low flow should I move it? and to which conditions? should I frag it?

ORA Green slimer. Already lost a staghorn par to f it which simply browned out and was covered with coraline. no RTN STN or white skeleton that showed and now the bas is doing the same:

DSC_6318.jpg

any help in this one is really appreciated as it's hard to get ORA corals here and also there is not much left to lose.

and my candy cane which I got in worse condition that in this picture and it improved after some weeks of feeding. I did stop spot feeding my corals and it regressed to this: shoudl I spot feed it again or move it to storinger light? it's in medium low light and medium low flow.

Love the pics.
Your scape isn't that bad. I would just suggest cleaning that back glass as well as the waterdrips on the back of the tank as those are taking away from the beauty of the tank.
The number of corals you added lately is impressive and you have some showstoppers there. I'm sure its a waiting game now till they grow a bit and you get that more mature tank look.
Can you please ID that growth you have on the round rock on the right next to the frags in this picture?
DSC_6345.jpg

How about the move you mention and the upgrade any more precise date and any info on the new tank...?
How about the corals you had in your tank since some time are you seeing signs of growth? any comaprison shots? how about your tank parameters and dosing protocol...?
Thanks again for the very dedicated updates.

Is the Hydnopora a large piece? I would frag a few small pieces from it keeping a safe margin of healthy tisue between those and any STNd part this way you'll have a backup if the mother colony doesn't make it. Place those frags in different areas in the tank and check how they react to differnt flow and light. I would say medium high light and medium high flow should be good.

The ORA green slimer definitly needs stronger flow not sure about light but it should handle at least medium to high light What lighting do you have? Sorry if I missed it in your thread.

The candy cane looks really bad. If it was fine while you fed it I would go back to spot feeding it and see if it improves.

Thanks Fred.
-Scape isn't that bad but it lacks any artistic siposition or any leading lines or maybe lements taht show deapth... won't be going for any non realistic scape just to get an artistic effect however I would love to have a functional (allows coral placements) and nice looking 2-3 island look and corals filling it up. I hope I'll be able to achieve that in the new tank.
-Upgrade should be taking place mid next year but I already started finalizing my choices by separate threads and also by reading lots of build threads. still need to finalize lighting decisisons, DSB VS SS, filtration, Scape... The build and internal finish is moving fast but with lots of holidays lately it's getting slower hopefully things will kick up again after christmas and New year.
-I usually clean the backglass butt his time I was in a hurry for pics so didn't have the time to. as I took pics just before traveling.
-Corals in the tank all look healthy except for 3-4 ones. Growth rates varry from very slow (Oregon Blue tort and Chalices) to very fast (red planet, Pavona, Montipora and a couple of Accros) I'm still relying on Randy's two parts and sometimes drip some additional Kalk. So far I'm adding aroudn 60ml A and B and I dhould be upping it to 70 next week.
-Comparison growth shots is still a project I need to fine the time to do. I do have pics of all my corals when I got them and at least at monthly intervals but my picture folder needs to be more organized. might do it by end of this year or maybe jsut before taking the tank down for the move and upgrade.
As to the growth on the rock this is my Superman pr purple haze montipora. did well initially and ecrusted over the cement plug holder I had it on while I was on travel so can't detach it. It lsot color suddenly and never recovered. couple of weeks ago the white portion of it left on the plug got covered wtih coraline while the ecrust on the cement block started showing polyps and growing. might be cutting the plug off to give it morelight soon.

what are the slender yellow fish that is not the tang? I'm looking for something yellow.

That would be the yellow cories wrass. they are good additions as some might pick pests on accro. They were reported to pick on flatworms but they didn't touch the red variety I had.
