MARS Meeting Speakers or Topics

In Memoriam
Hello MARS members. As VP, it is my duty to find speakers or come up with meeting topics. As we approach the end of 2007, I need to start planning for 2008, just in case I am VP for 2008 or to help out the new VP.

If you would like to see a particular speaker or would like us to cover a particular topic, please let me know so I can see what I can do to make it happen.

This also means that club members are more then welcome to present at the club meeting. If there is something you have been working on that you feel is beneficial to the members, please let me know so we can get you on the schedule.

Thanks for all your support and for making MARS a great club and a great place to learn.

I think Matt is doing a Steinhart presentation for BAR and has offered to do one for us. I'd really like to see that presentation if it has not yet been arranged.

Bring Matt back... he's a very knowledgeable individual. I'd love to see him do a talk on the new Steinhart aquarium.

yeah that sounds good. If he ever comes back. you see the other thread where they locked it and said he has a banned account and we cant contact him until it is cleared up? what the heck?

Speakers for 2008

Speakers for 2008

I spoke with Scott Weber, who just joined the UC Davis Vet school faculty (he was the head vet for the New England Aquarium) and he would be interested in speaking next year for MARS. If you are interested let me know and I will send you his contact information.

Could we get a tank builder possibly to come and speak at the meeting? I would love a presentation from someone like the person who designs and builds tanks for TRUVU or something of the like. Just an angle to pursue for you Bruce :)

Thanks

Still thinking of ideas :) One thought that usually always sparks interest is some kind of activity and/or demonstration(s). I know we recently had a fragging demo, always a great idea. Possibly some more DIY topics such as lighting, flow, and other miscelaneous modifications. I know people always like to hear tricks that make there life easier, wether it's technilogical let alone saves em a few bucks, you know that alwasy perks an ear in this hobby.

I know some people at a few of the larger protein skimmer companies that would probably be very willing, and interested, in doing a presentation if we'd like to hear from someone like that.

regardless of who will be speaking, can the club please purchase a small PA system so people can hear the guest speakers? also, it would be useful when calling out raffle ticket numbers at meetings or frag swaps.

I'll gather their contact information to send to you, and I'll send them a brief note to let them know they might be contacted in the near future. thanks.

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but I agree with Tim, I think that a Small PA would be good to have. It was difficult at times to hear the speaker from the back of the room. Just my 2 cents.

An idea here. I know that Airinhere makes his own live rock and hear his stuff looks great. I wouldn't mind seeing a demo of that if he would be willing to show us, and if there was enough interest. Airinhere what do you think?

Also slightly off topic, but I know we have a few people in the club with wholesale licenses that have or currently do business with the importers in LA. It would be fun to organize a weekend trip down to LA to visit a big importer and make some purchases...

Yeah that would be a fun trip and a cool get to know yeah trip also!

Gee, I wonder if there is any faster way to get their wholesaler access pulled than to show up with a club full of hobbyists who want to buy at an extreme discount. Soemhow I highly doubt this trip is possible. The only type of person who could swing something like this would be someone like John or Brian ect ect... and they would have to be nuts to do so for obvious reasons. As far as seeing one, the BAR swap was help at one and they gave tours. When people asked if they could make a purchase, WE got laughed at :) The only places I personally know in SoCal that let me in, do so because I used to help out at a HUGE place down there and if I showed up with "friends" I wouldn't be welcomed back. It also seems it wouldn't be fair to the stores who are trying to make a living. This buisness is tough to survive in as it is. These days the wholesalers ask to see your store, and want to see you listed in a directory among other things so they can protect the shops.

I second the PA system and think it is a great idea with our frag swap coming up in February.
