Master DOc 9420 upgraded tp 9440

I recently upgraded my 9420 to a 9440 by installing the second pump and fitting the shorter outlet pipe. Water level in the sump is now approx. half an inch below the outlet pipe. The problem I'm having is that it continously fills the collection cup with very clear water within minutes of switching the pumps on. The only way I can stop it and produce some half decent skimmate is by severely restricting the air input into one ( either) of the pumps. Have i missed something in the setup process ? It's been like this since installing the additional pump approx two weks ago.

You could try lowering the sump water level, that will likely help, also as the pumps age the flow will be reduced. Otherwise I would use the supplied air adjustment clamp to restrict the air intake of one pump as needed. The only technical issue I could think of is if the shorter pipe is not fully inserted, if you changed the filter bag that could also be a cause as the floss of the bag will cause this reaction if it is not thoroughly rinsed in hot water before first use. It may also be a response to an additive.

Roger.I don't use the filter bag at all. I have also been using the air adjustment clamp on one of the pumps to restrict the air otherwise within 2-3 minutes of releasing the clamp the cup fills with water. I'm also wary of lowering the sump level any further as it only just covers the pumps as it is.

I am not in a perfect position to answer as I haven't seen this in the US and the 50 and 60Hz pumps have enough differences that it could be a problem I am not familiar with. Are you sure that you don't have a booster ring or anything raising the height of the outlet pipe? You haven't added any new additives or done anything which would affect the surface tension?

I removed the booster ring when I replaced the large stand pipe as I never used it anyway. I've also made sure that the (short) stand pipe is fully seated. The only additives as such are balling chemicals which I've been using for the last 18 months during which time they haven't caused the problem when the skimmer was fitted with the single pump and large stand pipe.

I don't think that would cause it, but I don't have an answer, I would check with the UK distributor as your 240V/50Hz pump is the strongest of the models and it may be that it is unique to this model pump. Have you checked that the needle wheels of each pump are identical?

I think that that's going to be the next step along with checking that the new pump works on it's own with the longer pipe just to give me a starting point. Thanks for your help so far.

A quick update for anyone who's interested. I checked both pumps and they are identical. So I tried trimming the outlet pipe by approx 1" as I couldn't raise the skimmer any higher in the sump. I now need to fit the adjuster ring to get the bubbles to go up the neck of the collection cup. Aaaaaarrrrrggggghhhh !!!!

But at least it's working now. :lmao:

I am suspecting the pipe may have been cut too long at the factory, which is odd because it is done with a jig and it shouldn't be possible.

Hmmm.... Didn't think of that. Just out of curiosity, I'll measure it the next time I'm messing about in the sump. Thanks for your help.

I just (today) added the second 9420 pump to my skimmer and replaced the riser pipe with the shorter one supplied. After about 8 hours I have a collection cup of clear water. I'm pretty sure the pipe is seated.

What is the length of the shorter pipe supposed to be?

For the 9440 it's supposed to be 120mm (4.7 inches)

This wouldn't be out of the ordinary when the pump is first installed, but it should settle down within a week, if it doesn't let me know.
