This is an easy one for me to answer. I dont stop the surge :dance:
I had every intention of stopping it, I was also going to turn off a couple of CLS over night. I havent done either. My reasons for stopping the flow was to just alter the dynamic of the environment, I dont necessarily agree with the quiet flow at night principles so it wasnt about that.
As it has transpired I like the surge being on all the time. It stirs up so much detritus and uneaten food that the fish are always darting in and out of the current it creates to pick up some food and with only 3 fish in the tank currently it adds to the interest.
If I was going to stop the surge I would do it via a timer on the control valve. My surge tank is outside so to stop the pump would mean whatever water is in the surge tank at that time would remain there until the first surge in the morning. This could mean a very cold first surge. Not such an issue now but it would cause issues with SPS, especially in winter.
I would keep the water circulating via the pump and just stop the valve opening.

I've spent a lot of my free time the last 3 days reading through this and loving it!
We all dream of the big house build but rarely does it happen and especially with great photos etc..
Makes my 4x2x2 seem tiny but keeps the interest to keep tweaking it!

Thanks Snoopcousins, I appreciate you spending the time reading the thread. I upgraded from a 4ft x 30" x 19" to this current tank. It just takes a lot of time and planning!

That magnet gives me the creeps. I picture my finger getting crushed. You'll need a work out program just to operate that thing.
Big tanks can equal big problems, but these little frustrating set backs will drive you nuts. I'm still in awe with the DIY nature of your build. Nothing good ever happens fast in this hobby!

I have a mate who is a curator at a public aquarium. He told me a horror story of an employee who had just that happen. Apparently she was holding one half of the magnet and the other half was on the floor. It flew up and crushed her hand. I am very wary of using it
The revolutions is a simple device that attaches to each outlet pipe. As the flow is diverted down each pipe it pushes the revolutions down which rotates it slightly. Each time water flows down that pipe it rotates the revolutions so after about 6 times the revolutions has rotated 360 degrees. It just randomises the flow further.

If I was looking into an ocean motions now I would also consider a new product, the Derkroon Flowwolf. Its essentially the same as the OM product but its controllable.

I got my hands on one yesterday Mike and they are pretty nice...very small compared to the OM. I think I will get one and run it as well as the OM. I cant resist a flow device especially one with a led controller and to top it all, its got "wolf" in the name!

I thought I had better add an update, its been a while.
I havent really done a great deal to the tank as my time recently has been spent trying to sort out the room it sits in.
I have been running a smaller QT for a few weeks. I am trying to persevere with Chloroquine Phosphate. I convinced myself that the sheer size and volume of the QT tank wasnt helping. I was adding 22 avloclor tablets @250mg each, only which 155mg was CP. The rest was made up of packers and 22 x 95mg of packers could have been what turned my water cloudy. I now have an additional 30ltr tank and added just 2 tablets. i am happy to say that it has been problem free and i have a pair of centurion clowns half way through a 30 day treatment.
Nitrates sit at around 12, po4 is 0.07 and dkh is pretty stable at 10. I am slowly lowering the dkh as I want it around 8.5/9. Mag was 1440 at the last test (last week) and calc was 420.
Ive added some corals too. I have a few more colonies in the frag tank to add and some frags too, I will post some update pis when Ive added them.

Just to let you know I pulled the plug and purchased the Flowwolf. I had buyer's remorse when I realized it was 3/4" return, however after calling and speaking with them they are going to modify and give me 1" return. When I get and install I will let you know results. I am a way off since I still am designing my setup.

Nice one. I have heard that their customer support is good, its great that they are doing that mod for you. A mate of mine bought a 6-way and he brought it round for me to look at. I was very surprised at how small it was, especially the inlet size. For me though this is a bonus as I already have holes drilled from the tank to the fish room that will take the pipe easilly. I can add a further 14,000 lph pump and without too much grief install the flow wolf. Having this and the OM will really randomise the flow in the tank.
I am waiting on a price for a wp60 aswell
