Maui snorkeling

This September I am going to Maui for my honeymoon and we are going to do a couple days of snorkeling. We are staying at the Royal lahina and am told there is a couple decent spots within short walking distance to do some snorkeling. I want to pick up a camera for doing some underwater shots and trying to stay under the $500 price tag.

Was looking at that one, or if someone has some other suggestions that would be great. I dont expect professional quality photos(and I am by far not a professional photographer), but would like to be able to have clear pictures with decent coloring.

Thanks,

Brian

you cna pick up a cheap underwater digital camera here for arond $100, for the use it would get that would be the route I would go. Still wish that I could have a reef aquarium here.

i spent 2 weeks in maui this past october. I had a 50.00 or so water proof camera. Its a waste of time. I think good pictures need a SLR camera but they are a lot more expensive.

I hear there are some good sites up where you are staying. Make sure to drive south past Kihei to the black sand beach. The snorkeling there and all around is great.

I got a $20 waterproof bag that you put around point and shoot cameras. I was surprised at how good the results were. It might be a better option if you already own a point and shoot.

I borrowed a friend of mines waterproof case and canon powershot camera. I'd say the pics were marginal at best. It gave you the general idea, but didn't produce spectacular pictures by any means (consider the operator too :) ) But I think for $500 that might be the best you could swing.

I was in Maui twice last year (still paying for the 2nd trip) but if you're staying in Kaanapali your BEST bet is gonna be Black Rock. It's going to be down the beach to your right looking at the ocean, I believe. It has some of the most spectacular and diverse reefs at depths of up to 35 crystal clear feet! HUGE monti caps, tons of catspaw sized poccilloporas. The diversity of fish is amazing. HUGE moorish idols, yellow tangs, black durgeons, blue spot groupers, sea turtles (one of the best spots on the Island in the am for seeing turtles...BIG ONES!!!), wrasses up the...well you know..., shoals of convict tangs, butterflys, etc etc etc!

It'd be worth it to check out Molikini crater too. I would recommend going with Pacific Whale Foundation in Maalea, you'll see it on your way to your hotel, it's pretty close to the airport. Anyway, EVERYone on their boats has at least a bachelors degree, most of them masters degrees and beyond in marine, or related biology. Lunch included, and, booze on the way back. They will also take you to Lanai'i. That is Truly spectacular underwater topography with, again, HUGE, sailfin tangs, achillies tangs, etc etc etc. You may even run across a pod or two of spinner dolphins on your way between the crater and Lanai'i. All for a reasonable price.

Here's some pics from our 2nd trip where we stayed in Wailea so you "get the picture"...

Again, remember I SUCK at photography!

Jealous, have a great time!!!

I stayed at the Sheraton, which is right at Black Rock, and the snorkeling was superb. We took a trip to Molokini and it was OK but not as good as Black rock. Not to be missed. Saw a huge morey about 30' from the beach.
