Max % water change

Need your opinion. I have a 55 gallon plus another 10 in a sump. Just getting setup to prepare 20 of rodi and 20 gallons of salt water. Is 15-20 gallon to much of a water change in an sps / Lps tank?

Normally I do 5 gallons a weeks. I've had the tank for 3 years.

In my opinion it depends on the parameters of tank water and fresh salt water. If they are the same.... No big deal how much you do. If they are very different, such as much higher dkh, then I wouldn't do too large. This is why I like to run pretty close params as my salt mix.

There is a guy on Youtube who does 90% wc on his large mied reef. So long as parameters in range its ok. I've done about 45-50% before with no damage to corals.

Trying to figure out what's bugging my Zoas. All closed. For a long time. They open slightly when only blues in my hydra 52 are on. Mystery. Thought it might be water chemistry. Then flow. Then height. I have four small frag colonies in different locations to get as many variables out of the way as possible.

SPS and frog spawn growing like weeds lol.

Maybe ask in the Zoa forum?

I only have two kinds of Zoa in my SPS dominated reef:

1. Rainbow Zoas; they are doing well and look great.

2. Candy Apple Red; look crap, dont really open up. They were fine and looked great in my buddies mixed reef.

I guess trying to keep so many different species from different reefs of teh world into one little tank can be hard to keep everyone happy. I'd definitely ask in the zoa forum for advice.

I do 50-75% water changes on my tanks 3-4 times per year. Really seems to freshen things up. I use a salt mix with similar parameters to my tank though so nothing (measurable) spikes.
