Well my version of a wavemaker is just a few cheapie timers, set to go on and off 3 times a day. I think having a wavemaker that changes the flow every minute is alot to ask of your fish, as they tumble around your tank wonder what the hell is going on. And the thing is, I am going to be doing alot of arches with my liverock, not the kind of rock pile or wall that is most common, so Im thinking flow isnt going to be getting under the arches and detritus will settle too easily.

Closed loop(s) , 1 mid and one low with 2 outlets each and dual nozzles per outlet (loc-line). I have good flow and a killer clean-up crew so detrius has never been much of an issue. I do need to see Rich for some new hermits and snails. My skunk cleaner shrimpie has come up missing too... I suspect he's not monting cuz he's been gone for over a week now... D'oh The first death in a long time....
Closed loop was my original plan, as I dont like the look of equipment in a tank, but for me to get a closed loop setup with decent flow through 6 ports it would take more than a 3600 gph pump, and as far as wattage goes, that would be 360 watts compared to less than half that if I use 6 powerheads. Im going for efficiency these days as I settle into my ripe old age of 24.

Mods are about 700 gph 900 and 1200 show not appreciable difference in output but some claim the 1200 generates more heat.
I'm not satisfied with these mods running on timers because the nature of an electro magnetic impeller pump is to run in either clock wise or counter clock wise direction at random. Random is BAD!!! for turnign pumps on and off. Also, cycling such pumps (even new unmodded) causes them to rattle for a few seconds as a hydraulic bearing is generated in the impeller housing. If you want to generate flow, use these. If you want to make fancty waves, use a direct drive DC water mover like Tunze. My Mod. is simply an inexpensive tool to generate 3 times the flow of a stock powerhead, not to replace Tunzes. I guess that's where some folks get twisted-up. Cheap and simple rarely include such flexibility. I've even checked into DC motors and controllers to maybe design my own infinately adjustible unit but Tunze does it cheapoer than I could even buy the components for so....

Well, I gotta think about it then, tunze is definitly out of the question as far as my budget goes. I thought it wouldnt be as big of a deal, as my pumps will be on for 8 hours, off for 8, then back on for 8 more, but reguardless it is still random and can start backwards any of those swiches. And I am aware of the godawful noises that pumps can make when something goes wrong with the impeller. Hmmmm.

Not to influence you or contradict others and their methodoligy regarding mimicking nature... but : I've seen a dramatic increase in growth since I added the mods to my tank. DRAMATIC! I posted the March tank shot and the May shot and having added nothing since Mar. the growth iincrease has been pretty impressive by any standards. The rest period some folks subscribe to is great for feeding and such but I think ma nature rarely goves the real reefs sucha a regular break. Just my opinion on wave makers and times... prolly cuz they are so pricy for the actual benefit.... I guess I'm opinionated and jaded... LOL

I finished my stand, and Im working on my plumbing. Soon Ill be putting water in the tank and then I need to start aquascaping. Im gonna need 3 MJ 900 mods to start with and 2 more down the road. The 3 I need first do not need mounts, as they will be built into the liverock structure, the other 2 will be mounted on each side at the top of the tank and will need mounts. Just lemmie know how much Ching Ching you want for the first three and when a good time to meet with you would be.

Well, I have to order the pumps which take a few days to get. I have props the stainless material and can have the cowls finished when the pumps come in. I can make you the 3 w/o mounts for $90. The other 2 will be $50 each. Kits to install on a stock MJ are $25 ea. w/o mounts or $35 ea. with.

Yup, pumps included ($63 of the cost at $18 each plus shipping). if you do the math but including $2 each for propellers and $1 each for Stainless parts my labor is all but free. I'll be adjusting the price of these andother $10 so I'm not working for free. For friends, covering my cost is all I ask. The last 2 went to Jim for frags but I can't afford to do that anym more unless I find pumps for free!

You aren't using acrylic, your using plexiglas (noone EVER listens to Stacker till they screw-up). Alot of people don't know the difference between plastic and plastic and assume anything clear is acrylic (polycarbonate). Sheesh!
I ordered the pumps yesterday and will start on the other parts later today. Hopefully you can come get 'em Fri. the mods. will be doen tomorrow but I'm at the mercy of the shipping dept and delivery guys.
