On a side note, I just cleaned one of my Sureflow mod kit and the mount broke :(

I wasn't even close to being rough on it either.

It broke cleanly where the little shaft is connected to the ball joint so there will be no easy/feasible way to fix it.

I've had 2 of these mounts break in exactly the same spot, and they broke while they were running IN THE TANK! When they broke, the pump ended up hanging with the propeller aimed down into the sand. It clouded the water horribly. Luckily everything was ok.

When it broke the first time, I called up the company immediately and they sent me 2 replacements in short order, which was very nice of them.

I am running the pump off of a Red Sea wavemaker. It is possible that the vibration when it turns on is what caused the issue.

My possible solution is to drill into the ball and into the end of the other piece and slide a stainless steel rod into both ends and then seal it up with epoxy.

Until then, I've taken the sureflow out of my tank and I replaced it with a Koralia 4. Of course, the Koralia can't be used on the wave maker at all. :(

Mine is loud as well. Mind shooting over that pm there man.

Take out the mod and replace those red/black end caps on the shaft with the original Maxijet ones. The ones that came with the kits are no good IMO.

My GS2 has a hum to it too. Dont know how loud it is compared to the other kits out there though. Strange thing is the hum changes...almost like somethings not sitting correctly.

A couple of weeks ago, I modded a Maxi 1200 that I had with a Sureflow 1600 kit ( stock kit ). I really like the flow it produces but I had a vibration and rather frequent rattling sound that was becoming annoying for me. Previous posts in this thread said Sureflow ( Algae Free ) would take care of the problem but I decided to try an idea that was mentioned somewhere in this lengthy thread. :)

All I did was change both of the black/red end caps that go on the end of the rod with the ones that were originally on the Maxi jet 1200 impeller prior to adding the Sureflow kit. They seem to be made of a harder material than the ones that come with the mod kit.

After changing the end caps, the Sureflow 1600 has been running completely silent on the Maxi jet 1200 without the slightest hum, vibration, or rattle. The harder caps must hold the propeller straight and balanced compared to the softer caps that allow some movement ??

Anyway, just wanted to share this in case some of you are having the same noise issue with yours.

has anybody tried this mod on a maxijet 400? does it still push out alot of flow? i want to put this in a 30g cube w/o causing my corals to fly around :)

Yes i use the maxijet 400 with my ecomods.

The only kit a mj400 will not work is the GS2 high flow that is built for a mj1200.

I got two gulf stream 2's up and running two weeks ago and now one of them no longer works. Probably the prop is hitting the front of the cage. It makes a loud racket that can be heard in the next room and the flow is jerky.

I can't figure out why; if I block the front with my hand it appears to be running OK, but as I allow more and more water to flow it suddenly starts with the noise again. If I unplug it and plug it back in it always does the same thing. I've also tried switching it to another MJ1200 body and another magnet, no change.

Has anyone else had this problem?

My GS2 doesn't come with the end caps, and I use the original one, still hum like the air plane....any tips for that.
Thanks, Shin.

luke33,
Did you receive a PM from the other guy ?

Update:
AlgaeFree sent me a fix to my humming problem ! Their customer service is awesome ! Sureflow is running silent now !!! :D

I have been following this thread for a while. All of the mods seem to have had one complaint or another. Just wondering if someone who has used more than one mod can comment on which one is higher quality/best overall.

Thanks

what is that fix? mine hums too

Is yours a SureFlow 1600 ? If so ask northbay-reefer to PM you the contact info for AlgaeFree. The fix is a new prop !

dhnguyen and gang,

Since you know all about modding the MJ, I have a question for you. On the G2 triton, I have a question. It keeps stalling, so when I take the mod apart it seems the magnet wont spin on the rod. It acts like it is to tight on the rod. I take off the propeller and turn the end plastic part on the magnet and it will spin again. Is there anything I can do to keep this running? I hope this makes sense. Thanks

^^ sounds to me like you have some serious calcium deposit inside the magnet causing the shaft to bind like that. Soak the magnet in vinegar overnight.

Just like any pumps, you have to clean these out every once in a while.
