it's supposed to break in after a week or so

well i had it for a week and a half and i notice it more... :(

Humming and excessive noise are typically due to propeller being unbalanced. This is one of the drawbacks I see in the Sureflow kit design in that for some reasons they opted to make the shaft and propeller all in one unit. IMO it would have been better to use a real RC boat propeller where the propeller is much more precisely engineered and manufactured. Their propeller blade is a bit too thick and may offer much more resistance and drag than a typical RC boat prop. This will cause more vibration and noise IME.
Why reinvent the "wheel" (re: propeller) when you don't have to is my thought.

Anyway you can see about balancing the prop and see if this will help. Basically run the mod outside of water without the shroud on while using your hand to to keep the shaft centered. run the propeller against some fine grit sand paper (careful that you don't take away to much) until it is quietest and smoothest. The caveat to this is that as you shave away the prop, the flow will lessen a bit but IMO nothing all that drastic.

the Eco mod doesn't come with the cool mount though.

Was just about to say that!!:p I would be very interested to see the build quality.

what do you guys mean by "gyre flow"
A gyre flow is a circular flow. I plan to alternate my flow between clockwise and counter-clockwise directions:

dhnguyen,

I'm with you regarding controllers. I can't find a pump controller that can switch the flow every 15 minutes. The longest switching period is 7.5 minutes on the Reef Fanatic. The fast switching will void the warranties on many pumps (i.e., Tunze 6025).

I will probably place my pumps on the X10 system that operates my lighting circuits (12-hour daytime actinic & 12-hour reverse daylight photoperiod). That means my pumps will alternate the gyre flow every 12 hours.

I hope my sand doesn't pile up too badly over a 12-hour period. I'll probably use a smaller pump (MJ-600) for a gentler flow.

Ok, i have an Eco mod on its way. Should be here by thursday. PA has them in stock....and living 45min away, its great shipping. I plan on just taking off the sure flow and droping in the eco mod. I'll leave the mount and the magnet i dropped superglued on it.

No flow tester, i'll just have to go on the difference between my hydor 4, sureflow and now the eco mod.

cool that you are getting one!
obviously there will be a difference in fwd pressure, but dont these mods disperse alot of flow out to the sides as well?

also just curious, how many of you guys go out of your way to get a few GPH's behind your LR? i found that there is no difference in water quality, and if you have enough flow on top of the rocks, it will find it's way back through them.

there won't be any flow out the sides unless it's spinning backwards. the slits in the shrouds allows for water to be pulled in behind the prop to then be pushed out forwards.

This is how you test the flow rate. It will be easier to do this with 2 people.

Connect a large inflatable plastic bag (at least 2 gallons or so) at the output of the pump. Turn on the pump submerged and time it for a predetermined number of seconds. Then measure just how much water is displaced into the bag. The rest is basic math to figure out the GPH.

This is exactly how many pump manufacturers test theirs too :)

I may try that D, the problem is i only have my 3yr old boy with me so it may not work well. No reefer buds in the area.......so i'll just go with by touch to start, then get a 7g trash bag and test both of them.

Yeah.. I had to run my tests by myself before and it was a bit of a challenge to do. The bag will get filled up very quickly.

Imagine me holding the bag onto the powerhead, flipping on the power supply switch with my big toe, watching my watch and timing the thing.
