MaxiJet sureflow 1600gph?

I know this isn't really a sureflow questions, but I have a quick question for you regarding the mjmods. I purchased a kit from mjmods a while back and finally got around to putting them together. They seemed to work fine for a while, but now they don't work properly. I read that you suggest to pull off the shroud and try to run it w/o the shroud and then shave down some of the prop to get it to balance out. When should you do this? My problem is that when I take off the shroud, the magnet will not stay in the middle of the hole, it will spin for a min., then get stuck against the side of the pump. Is this because it is not balanced? Do you have any other suggestions?
 
ultra spikey - I looked on their <a href="http://www.algaefree.com/sure_flow.html" target="_blank">webpage</a> and they claim 1600 gph. I would think that would be with the MJ1200 and the MJ900 would be a little less. It would require you to perform a test (bagging and timing the water flow) that dhnguyen explained earlier on in this thread.

Chrisrush â€"œ I built a few of these and never had a problem as you described. I do like the impellor with Dumas (pictured above) the way it is built. It is more involved cutting up the impellor to get the airline tubing on but I have never had it quit or needed to balance it. I do run mine 24/7 and never turn it off. Is the shroud from MJMods? The only thing I can think of is that the impellor is not straight in the housing with shroud installed or the impellor is not straight itself.

The shroud is from MJmods. I might just trash these two and start over with the sureflow instead. I was hoping to avoid that, but it might come down to it.
 
Also Jay, how much noise do these make when they turn off/on. I see that you have yours on 24/7, but would it make noise for it to be on/off every hr?
 
Mine dont make any sounds when you turn them on. My MJ1200 does make this annoying hum that cuts on and off. It's really annoying. My MJ900 doesnt do it, so i'm thinking maybe either somethings wrong with the pump or the prop is not balanced.
 
so if you take the shroud off you MUST use your hand to hold the impeller magnet inplace and centered otherwise how is it suppose to spin?
 
I did use my hand to keep it centered. I think that it's off balance when I re-install the shroud causing it to not spin properly.
 
With the MJMod I found that turning it on and off caused a lot of wear and tear. The prop gets whacked if it starts in reverse. IME the Dumas 3004 prop delivers a lot of torque to that stopper. Like I said earlier I’m using this to produce a strong circular flow in the tank and not a wave motion. I have found that some of the modded MJ’s required a few days to “slime up” and became quiet. Mine is dead silent and that doesn’t change when I do turn it off or on.

Anyone use a mj400 with these?

I run 2 mj900s in a 37g and tried the hydor-flo which oscilated the flow, but cut it down. I might try mj1200s with the hydor-flos, but was wondering what 2 of the mj400s with this mod would do in a 37g tank?
 
man im not liking this magnet mount, i have a 3 year old that i know for sure would rip it off the galss given the chance, how could i incorporate using the sureflow setup and no magnets?
 
what magnet mount frezel? Is it the Algae Free one that they sell for the sureflow kit?

The magnets I mentioned are very strong so I highly doubt an adult could easily pick it off the glass without some effort let alone a 3 yr old.
 
im not sure what magnets you recommened dhnuguyen, and i was talking about the algae free ones. i just need somethign so that he can rip off and have a powerhead ripping around my tank spashing my acros...I hear these earth magnets are crazy strong
 
go back to the first page frezel where I referenced some of the ones I've used. They're very strong. You could risk injury infact if you're not careful.
 
His recommendations are on the first page of this thread. They're cheaper, stronger, and more compact than the algae free version.
 
Beat me to it. I've got a nice blood blister left over from playing with a couple of these magnets too close together.
 
WOW 80lbs pull force thats nuts dont let that thing loose to far from glass it might go through lol

ill check them out i also have an idea with suction cups and a bracket but not sure it will work ill take pics when mods get here and i try to build it....

FYI i have 2 dumas 3004 props sitting here wondering if i should mod the mod(sureflow) lol
 
there is no way to tell from the vids. I can tell you that they feel about the same as my own medium flow MJ mod which was tested at around 1500gph give or take.
 
Eh, either way, I still like them a lot. Very WIDE flow that doesnt hurt my soft stuff. My 1200 still keeps randomly humming though, hopefully that will go away.
