Maxima Clam Under PC Lights

I've kept this Maxima clam in my tank for about a year now and apparently I was not aware they require metal halide lighting. The LFS that I purchased this at told me that they are easy to keep and that my PC lights would be enough to keep them. Currently my tank is setup with 4 96 watt PC lamps on a 150 gal tank that is 5' x 2' x 2'. I'm really concern about this clam. Can anybody give me some good advice as what I should do to give proper care for this clam? Any insights would be great. Also posted below is the tank that it is in.

first that clam is a T. Crocea. they are the most light demanding of all the clams. if your not going to get MH lighting the best you can do i move it up as high as you can, as close to the lights as you can
 
IMO, you may have gotten lucky. THey're not impossible to keep under PC lights, but it's certainly risky. Why are you lucky? Most seem to die within 6 months.

If he's alive, and growing (How much has he grown?) Then as I said, you might be lucky :)
 
I think I'm really lucky to have kept him so long. All this time I thought he was a maxima clam. He hasn't grown much, I think he probably grew about an inch or two since I first placed him in my tank. I actually tried to move him up the tank, however he is stuck to the rock that I placed him on. The rock is just to large to move.

I have thought about upgrading to metal halide, but it is just so costly. Why are the Crocea so light demanding? Are they normally located in really shallow waters? Looking forward to your reply. Thanks.
 
I Am going to jump in here. I have a Crocea as well. I have had him for about a year. He is under 520 watts of PC's. I just recently moved him to the top because he does not look good. He appears to be loosing his color. I mean it really looks like the color is flaking off. Would that be bleaching? Is it too late?
 
Yes, that's bad. I'd move him to someone else's tank who has MH lights. (Make sure it is acclimated to the lights!)
 
Wow that is such a great deal on 2 x 250 metal halide retrofit for only $239!!! I might have to get this. I was expecting to pay at least $400-$600 for an upgrade, but I think I might do this to save my clam. I will post some pictures on a later date to see if the clam will improve.
 
I have another question, how can I move my clam if they are suction to the rocks. I really want to move him closer to my lights for the mean time. I would appreciate your feedback on this. Thank you and I look forward to your replys.
 
tip the clam to the side so you can see the byssal threads, take a sharp knife and cut the threads as far away from the clam as you can
 
ya know if you live in LA you shouldnt wait more than 2 days if you order those lights, then you wont have to move the clam...it takes 6 days to get it to pa
 
If you look in his right mantel, it is slightly discolored. This is actually my first clam so I don't know how they react when they are stress or thriving. I've read on other post that if they were thriving they tend to grow 1/2" to 1" each month. Is this true? Because my clam grew about 1" within a year span. Well I'm looking to move my clam to my nano when my nano is fully setup.
