Maxima Clam under PC LightS?

I've seen several people here on RC that have successfully kept Maxima clams under PC lighting in 55 or 75 gallon tanks. We currently have a Derasa that is absolutely thriving under 260 watt PC lights in our 55. My question is how well do you think a Maxima would do in a 125 gallon that is 24" tall that will be under 576 ( 6x96 ) watts of PCs? Thanks in advance.

When you read that maximas have been kept under VHO, or PC's I would be a bit leery....I dont think that they are giving all the necessary information. In the next paragraph ill list some necessary facts about maxima clams.

Light dependency varys amoung maximas depending on pigmentaion and size. THe brown or gold maximas can get by with less light, how much less I cant say. The other factor is size....a baby max really dosent need much light for the simple reason is it dosent have enough mantle, not enough surface area to live fully off of photosynthesis, so it has feed to keep itself alive...thats where the DTs and golden pears food sources of the right micron size come into play....IMO baby maxs can live under power compacts and VHOs untill they grow. Growth is the kicker with maximas as they grow they need more intence light and higher par numbers as the mantle gains more surface area the clam shifts to a more light dependent feller...and studys have indicated that the clam starts to loose the ability to filter feed.

So when people tell you that they have kept maximas under power compacts ask them a few questions, One what coloration is the clam, what size is the clam, and how long have you had the clam....another factor about the maximas is that they look great for months but in reality they can be starving for light and living off there energy reservs and one day walla empty clam shell out of no where....Im sure there is always exceptions to this...its possible some clams have adapted to lower light situations, But IMP jenn If one atempts to keep maximas under power compacts I think the sucess percentage will be under 20% for long term. But if one goes with T5s and up the percentage goes way up....say a 250 halide system I would say a 95% sucess percentage baring preidation and disease...and poor water quality....

But if you have to have a maxima then go with a baby max but be ready to feed it by the bowl technique at least three times a week......but once it starts gaining size a light upgrade will be necessary.....now as far as the gold maximas I would ask barry at clams direct about there light requirments...the guy deals with 1000s of clams year around and he keeps them under 250DEs ....

Scuba, thank you so much for taking the time to explain in major detail. I will ask Barry like you suggested.

No problem JENnKerry Barry is the expert and he has a forum on his site at www.clamsdirect.com he also frequents this board and answeres questions....I see that your setting up a 125 and your going to go with 576 watts of pcs...how about going with 150 DEs more pop than 175' halides and enough to keep that maxima your wanting but not so much to really PO your LPS and softies.. three of them would be 450 watts...less energy than the powercompacts and more pop....

My wife and I have never really liked halides. The corals we have and the corals that we would ever get in the future are primarily LPS, so dont require the higher intensity that halides offer. I do have two SPS frags but they came from a PC lit tank and they're growing nicely. I think the whole Maxima thing came about when we decided to get a second clam when the 125 goes up, because we literally have no more room on the sandbed right now. It is very possible to get a very nicely colored Squamosa or Derasa like the one we have, but the coloration of the Maximas are absolutely stunning.

Yes I know the temptations all to well...thats why I have emptyed my wallet a few times seting up my clam tank lol, and yes Im addicted to maximas as well....and your corect you choose your light systems for your live stock....although under my 250 DEs my soft corals do well...and my LPS do well the frogspawn hammer types do...a candy cain took a bleacing but has come back....but yes they do bring heat isshues as well....

Hey Scuba, I heard back from Barry and he pretty much said the same thing you did. Not that I dont trust your judgement, I just want as many opinions as I can get. He did say that by placing a Maxima at least half way up in a tank with the lights I mentioned, it shouldn't be a problem. But he did not say anything about the colors. Sue the one moderator on clams direct did confirm that the gold Maximas would be fine but anything that has more intense colors like the blues might be a problem. But I did ask Barry about the coloration, waiting to hear back from him. Thanks again for your help.

No problem just wanted to get you some quality information form a good source...! There is too much hear say on reefcentral every one and I mean everyone has there .02 worth, lol so when in dounbt ask the big boys lol....glad Barry got back with you....a great guy and a fantastic business...

Hte golds are nice...shop around for one they have some varation in the patterns, and as a bonus there cheaper than the other maxs!
