Maximas attatching to glass

Hay, I have a quick question.. I have 2 4" Maximas that are trying to attatch to the bottom of my aquarium? I am assuming I should prevent this? Should I cut a thin piece of pvc, and burry it in the sand under them? or is there a better metod? How do you guys(& ladys) with bare bottom tanks prevent this?
