Maxspect LED owners!!!

The main reason why we are buying Maxspect LED lights is not because it is cheaper or good looking, it is because it can grow corals, especially SPS. I have been using a Maxspect G2 230W since 3/19/10 so I thought I would give you an update on one specific SPS frag that I have been tracking as progress.

This frag is placed about 6" below water surface (10" from the light).

all setup now. i love the look of the 110's. just the right amount of white and blue. the mounting rails are are the cheap side. but i guess you cant have everything =)

What size tank and what are you keeping in that tank? I am getting a fixture for a 30g cube and not sure between the 110w or 160w.

For a 30G cube, if you're planning on keeping SPS/Clams, I would go for the G2-160w.

I have tried the 110w and the 160w, and find that the 110w while very capable, just doesn't have the light penetrating power as the 160w b/c of the lack of the 30w LEDs. You won't be disappointed!

my tank is a 100g 48x24x20. It will be stocked with mostly softies and lps, maybe a few sps up high. It's an upgrade from my cube. I went with the 110's because I didn't want the blue to get washed out by the 30w whites.

Just found this thread, looking good. I'm thinking about replacing my Current 2x250w Sunpod with these things. Over a standard 55, do you think two of the G2 110s would be enough for mixed SPS and LPS, end to end over the tank?

I have a 75, and have tested dual 110's. They are plenty if you keep the SPS up high. I like the color of the 110's more than the 160's. You could always go with 160's and just not run the 30W LEDs most of the day - that's what I wish I would have done. It's just more flexibility for not a lot more money.

Haha I wish I was in a position where an extra 230 bucks was not a lot more money...its a roughly 30% increase to add the floods.

Anyway, if two of those are about $700, I could prob swing it if I were able to get about 500 or so for my MH setup, the $200 difference would be a lot easier to talk my wife into... :D

Just ordered my G2-230w and they said they will ship at the end of the month. They must be backordered. Will try and get some pics up, once I get the light up.

I would go with 2 160's. You can always change a couple of the white LED's to blue, and if you feel the 110's aren't enough light, you're S.O.L. If you have the 160's, you can keep the 30w LED's on for a short time period, not too mention, there will soon be different color spectrums for the 30w LED, so you can change that one to a higher kelvin rating if you want a bluer look. I put my 160w over my 55g just to see the color, light spread, penetration, etc., and I really liked it. If you're switching from 2 x 250w MH's, you should definitely go with the 160's.

Wijic: I didn't know about that. Do you know of anyone who has it working to light a reef tank? It looks like a great idea on concept at least. I looked it up, and it seems many people complain that the light is too blue for their homes :)

Edit: Did a search here and found huge amounts of information about it. Thanks again Wijic.

Ardeus, you may enjoy this video, it was done using and LED setup and a Profilux controller

I may take the plunge into maxpect in the next few months... what is the general recommendation for a 30" high tank, I like my light spectrum to be 20k if not bluer
currently I run T5s and love the color that the ATI Blue Plus bulb generates I am looking for the same color warmth from LED, can any of the maxpect models do the trick, will be keeping mostly SPS at the Medium to Top and LPS and Softies down the lower and sandbed parts of the aquarium.

I would go for 2X G2-160W. You'll want to have the 30W LED's to punch through the 30" of water. However, by default with the bulbs on the color temp is definitely not 20K, more like 12K. If you want that type of blue with the 30W bulbs on, you'll need to swap out some of the 3W White LED's on each fixture with blues. I would probably say six on each fixture.

Uh oh.... Look out for this guy! ^^^^ :)

I am gonna rip what is left of my hair on my head if my G-1 doesn't show up soon! :)

The suspense is KILLING me!

12K is juck LOL
how about the G2-170w has anyone done a par testing at 24"/30"

It would basically be like the G2-160 without the 30W bulbs on, which from personal experience (a 24" tank with lights 6" above surface) is good enough for LPS and zoas at the bottom.. Even with my 30W bulbs off they are fully opened and happy. The color with the 30W bulbs off is definitely 20K or so...

If you don't want any risk or spare any expense, get 2X 230W.. Set the 30W timers to be on when you are at work, and off when you are at home.. That's what I do.
