Maxspect LED owners!!!

Whats everyone doing with the spare LED?
I got 10 Semi White and 5 Violet led laying in a bag now. I think I'm going to put together a sump light to replace my twist light i have in place

wwu123,
the violet led is just above the true UV range and is an important part of the PUR spectrum. I would leave these in. I am currently testing these with a friend (at his store) and we have found that there is a considerably better colour development with the violets. This was particularly obvious on disc anemonies, where the spots have become more intense. (turqouise) column.

I still have two of the four violets in place, will prob swap a third back in in place of a white.

Only thing is the tank is getting a bit purple, due to the single red, don't know how folks can add more than one. Someone posted the spectrum of a Fiji Purple T5, and it's not violet but rather two peka at red and blue. The violets don't seem like they're giving off visible light, but probably also adding to the purple tint.

Here's a silly question, but I figured I would ask as I would hate to have to buy another power strip for my reefkeeper light... darn things are spendy.

The Maxpect LED's are a single power cord per module, correct?

Another silly question is
Maxspect is about 3x cheaper than other brands
question is... what so different between maxspect vs other brands of LED fixtures ?

Kevotron,

being made in Asia makes the first big cut in price. Most other companies produce locally; Giesemann in Germany, Pacific Sun in Poland, tons of smaller and larger brands in the USA. This makes labour costs more expensive, then you have the lenses, which Maxspect has retrofitted and cut some corners with. On one side they have been inventive and pushed the envelope, for me the long-term quality will tell us more (that said, how long should a lighting arrangement live? Technology marches on). Also, their LEDs were a different quality, but this is now an buyers option. They do not yet come with dimming and full-feature computer control, which is a costly option to build in. Then comes the optical design, which is for me anything but attractive. It's just another black box!

In the end, I think one can say you get what you pay for, but I do think you are getting quite a bit for the buck with the Maxspect system. It can be tweeked and the size is small enough to be a usefull modular concept solution for larger tanks. For tanks deeper than 24"/65cm, one may find they do not penetrate deep enough, even with their lensing system, which is actually a light bundling system using cone reflectors and optional lenses.

In the end, for most aquarists running a smaller tank, they are the budget solution that works. Plus their exchangable LEDs allow for some experimenting with spectrum (I know of no other system that allows this with ease) I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them, even though I would probably build my own, as my tanks are atypical and relatively difficult to illuminate. Still, as a unit for experimenting with spectrum, they are very attractive!

Let me put it this way, if I lived in the USA, I wouldn't hesitate buying a bunch of them. They are dirt cheap over there. In Europe, they just compete pricewise with other units, due to import duties and our local tax. (read 38% more expensive) Yes, I'm jealous!:lol2::lol2:

I used some of the whites that I took off my 230W and added a few more royal blue and made a 36" strip using a Meanwell 700mah driver. Nothing fancy it is just controlled by a timer for on and off. I have a 29g tank with T5 that I wanted some blue color. It looks pretty good.

Looks good and I bet you got a good boost in PAR.

Anybody order an optics set for a G2 230 watt plus a couple LED's and a couple optics? I got it in the mail today and you are getting mine lol. I talked to Brian at Finsreef and they must have switched the shipping labels.

i plan to get LED-G2-800- 230W is it enough for my tank - 4x2x2 ft or i need to get : 2x LED-G2-400-160W ?

If you order the 230W with the reflector kit, you will have dark corner at both ends. The 230W is good for a 36" tank. It is best to go with 2x 160W if budget allows.

Brian was quick in responding to my questions. You will not have any problem with him or with Fins Reef. My order was shipped promptly. You should email or call him if you have any issue.

Wait a minute... Jeff what exactly was in that order? I am waiting on an order that is way overdue. Fins reef not returning my calls or emails. This could get ugly.

I just found out he is at a trade show . He said he call me today so we will see what happens

This is true. Brian is the best. I have no doubt the orders will be fixed quickly.
